Cebu City ? In a rather unexpected result during the official weigh-in, Francisco 'Chiquita' Rosas of Mexico stepped on the scales at 117 lbs while Milan 'Metodico' Melindo weighed 111 lbs for their twelve round fight for the WBO Intercontinental flyweight (112 lb) title.
Rosas returned to the scales and weighed 113.5 lbs after trying to shed the excess pounds for an hour. Fight judge Salven Lagumbay - who acted as WBO supervisor in behalf of Asia-Pacific head Leon Panoncillo ? said that the fight will go on this Saturday but if Rosas wins, the Intercontinental crown will be vacant and if Melindo wins, the title will go to him.
The weigh-in for the Pinoy Pride 8: Philippines vs Mexico fight card was held Friday noon at the SM Cebu Entertainment Center.
Jason ?El Ni?o? Pagara, the WBO Youth Asia-Pacific jr.welterweight champion, stepped in at the division limit of 140 lbs while Rosbel ?El Lobito? Montoya of Mexico weighed 141 on his second attempt. The same rules apply, if the overweight Montoya wins, the title is vacant.
Genesis ?Asukal? Servania weighed 121 lbs while Mexican Gerson ?El Nene? Guerrero stepped in at 120 lbs for their eight round superbantamweight match-up. Servania is a top-notch prospect but will be fighting his first foreign opponent in this fight.
ALA Promotions patriarch Antonio Aldeguer expressed his thoughts to this writer regarding this match. ?It is better to lose and learn something than win and learn nothing. If Genesis loses, he will gain experience. What good will it do a fighter if he wins by knockout in two rounds? But if Genesis wins, he'll be catapulted up the rankings.? Aldeguer said.
For the undercards, Roma Rate (110 lbs) vs Ryan Bongcawil (111.5 lbs) ? 6 rounds, Melvin Gumban (115 lbs) vs Junjie Lausa (115 lbs) ? 6 rounds, Mark Acub (130 lbs) vs Sehayahei Llanera (129.75 lbs) ? 4 rounds, Ralph Lulu (125.5 lbs) vs Jocel Gestopa (126 lbs) ? 6 rounds, Ivor Lastrilla (122.5 lbs) vs Cris Leon (121 lbs) ? 4 rounds and Gilbert Magos (106 lbs) vs a rather light Joven Hesona who weighed only 99 lbs. - 4 rounds.Fight time at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel this Saturday will be at 6 PM.
