All?s Well That Ends Well?

After all is said and done, Dong Secuya simply played chess while the other guy played checkers. The late Grandmaster Rosendo Balinas would have been proud of his former pupil; how he coolly defended himself against someone with a blunt instrument and maneuvered from a tight middlegame to deliver a brilliant checkmate.
But there is something I would like to get off my chest. I wonder why our national treasure, Manny Pacquiao, chose a foreign national to co-author his ?official biography?? There are many gifted Filipino writers and novelists who write in English. I haven?t read that book, to be honest, but Pacquiao?s story would have benefited from real Filipino flavoring. I?m sure there are Filipino literature buffs among the Paclanders and they know what I?m driving at.
For decades, our leaders subjected us to slogans that endorsed Filipino confidence and capability: Filipino first or ?Bayan Muna?, ?Yes, the Filipino can!? and ?Kaya natin ito!?. So why did the Pacman choose a foreign national to create his ?official website?? There are many competent Filipino web designers, not just Dong Secuya, who could have provided Pinoy artistry and ingenuity.
But that is Pacquiao?s right, and I am just another lowly fan awed by his achievements. History will remember his name, not mine. I do not have a degree in journalism or mass communications. My previous writing experience prior to 2005 consisted of my weekly grocery shopping list. But I chose to provide a few hours of my time to contribute articles to support Pacquiao?s overseas exploits and our local boxers. Pacquiao has accomplished something unprecedented in our country?s history and we are truly grateful.
But, when I look and ponder on the comments made in the forum, I cannot blame those who are getting disillusioned and disappointed. Dong has always reminded me that Pacquiao has directly or indirectly touched the lives of millions. The fact that there are many contributors to this website who are not ?real journalists? like yours truly, is proof of that.
This article is not meant to gloat. I know this will not be the last time this website will be subjected to harassment and peril. Such are the dangers and flaws of the human race. There is a Filipino saying ?Kung ang puno maraming bunga, maraming bumabato.? Rough translation - A tree that bears much fruit is an inviting target.
In behalf of Dong Secuya, I would like to thank those who remained loyal and voiced their support for this website.
I would like to end with a quote from one of the Philippines? greatest authors, the late Nick Joaquin - ?The point is not how we use a tool, but how it uses us."
