GMA Television's boxing tournament and reality series ?Buhay Boksingero? will reach its climax this July 30 Saturday in Tagbilaran City, Bohol. The championship for the five weight categories will be decided by six round fights at the Holy Name University Gym.
This series was launched last March 4 here in Cebu City and the boxers from various gyms based in Cebu competed once a month in four separate venues. The semi-finals were held last June 26 in Argao's Diosdado Macapagal Sports Complex.
Set to appear in the light flyweight finals are Jobert Alvarez of the Donaire stable vs. Delmar Cabatas of the Sta. Cruz stable of Talisay City. The talented and unbeaten Alvarez could wind being the discovery of this tournament. He was tough enough to survive a bout with gastroenteritis in the middle of his semi-final match against RJ Gonzales.
The flyweight finals will be between Rommel Banquerigo of the RWS Gym vs. Renoel Pael of T.I. Cebu Stable. Jherpaul Valero of T.I. Cebu and Jolito Catubay of the RWS Gym will decide the superflyweight category.
The match that could wind up being the highlight of the tournament is the 120 lbs ?catchweight? division finals between Bobby Sentillas of T.I. Cebu Stable vs Memar Dula of the Sta. Cruz stable.
Sentillas is a flawed fighter with a ?Hail Mary? punch. In his pro debut last November in Siaton, Neg.Oriental, Sentillas was down twice in the opening round and looked ready to go in the second round before he landed a hard body shot that knocked out his opponent,Charlie Sabejon.
In the Argao semi-finals, Sentillas and GV Banares engaged in a four round down the wire shootout but Sentillas scored a knockdown in the dying seconds of the last round to tilt the judges? decision in his favor. He will be tested once again against the pressure-fighting Dula.
Boholano Jessie Cris Rosales of the SGG Gym is expected to have the support of the hometown crowd when he squares off against Rodel Wenceslao of the Phil-Aust gym of Mandaue City in the superfeatherweight division.
The fights are offered free to the public and will be supervised by Celso Miranda of the Games and Amusements Board (GAB) of Cebu.
