The new management group engaged by Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao to handle his business, financial and professional interests has started reorganizing the mythical Pacland with the hiring of the former manager of two popular boxing champions, Mexican-American Jose Castillo, as the officer in charge of the boxing aspect of the management agreement.
Castillo, an American citizen who is based in Orange County, California, will basically undertake the previous chores assigned to Pacquiao's former business advisor, Michael Koncz.
"His task will include the preparation and review of fight contracts of Pacquiao and the other boxers under MP promotions," a source, who requested anonymity, said.
Castillo is the former manager of Mexican boxing great Marco Antonio Barrera and Venezuelan knockout artist Edwin Valero, the former world lightweight champion who committed suicide after he was jailed for killing his wife.
"Manny knows him personally and allowed VisionQwest to hire him as part of the management group," said the source.
Unlike Koncz who personally reported to Pacquiao, Castillo will be part of the VisionQwest management team and will have to submit his recommendations through the management group.
The source said Castillo intends to strengthen MP Promotions by working for the discovery and promotion of more Filipino boxing talents who will fight side by side with Pacquiao.
"He plans to make MP Promotions the biggest boxing promotional company in the Philippines and instrumental in discovering new talents who will be given the opportunity to shine," the source added.
"His very close relationship with Fernando Beltran of Mexico's Zanfer Promotions could work very well in getting Filipino fighters more world title fights," the source said.
Castillo, according to the source, is a low-key person who prefers to work in the sidelines rather than hog the limelight.
"But he knows this business like the palm of his hand and he will surely be able to help in protecting and promoting Manny's interests," the source added.
