Mancio wins Phil. Lt. flyweight title in blood soaked battle

San Remegio, Cebu ? Jerson Mancio fought with blood flowing from cuts on his left cheek and eyelid and absorbed the best punches of Jason Canoy in their battle for the vacant Philippine light flyweight title. Mancio, who hails from Agusan del Sur, used a well disciplined game plan which put a premium on body punches.
Canoy, who fights out of the Omega Boxing Gym of Cebu, was the stronger puncher and his well timed one-two combos stunned Mancio on several occasions. But Mancio would slip back to a defensive shell before he got into serious trouble and counter with hooks to the ribs.
In round four, an accidental headbutt inflicted a cut on Mancio?s left cheek which cost Canoy a point. In the fifth round, another headbutt opened a cut on Mancio?s left eyelid.
Canoy stepped up his offense after being deducted another point. Mancio?s cornermen managed to stop the bleeding in between rounds but blood would flow again after he got hit. Past the halfway mark of the fight, Mancio had trouble seeing through his left eye.
As fatigue set in, both boxers went for haymakers. Trainers Edito and Edmund Villamor pleaded with Mancio to cover up and box as Canoy?s power made him dangerous throughout the fight.
Mancio maintained his aggression despite being ahead and even tried to finish Canoy in the 12th round. The scores read 115-111, 116-110 and 116-110 for Mancio.
This was the first career loss for Canoy (9W-1L-1D, 6 KO?s) while Mancio moves up to 13W-1L-3D, 5 KO?s.
In the undercards, Welbeth Loberanis of Mandaue City won by 6th round TKO over Don King Tampus of Davao. Loberanis worked behind a sharp left jab early on but Tampus decided to target his midsection in the third.
In the sixth round, after a fierce exchange, Tampus bled profusely from a cut on the lower lip prompting the ring physician to recommend a halt to the bout. Official time ? 2:28.
Crowd favourite Jun Intor had to settle for a technical draw in the first round against Cris Leon of Bukidnon. Intor scored a knockdown but a clash of heads inflicted a deep cut on Intor?s right forehead which lead to the fight being stopped.
Joseph Von Minoza of Talamban, Cebu City used a crippling body shot to knock out Tata Ramuga of Cagayan de Oro in the first round. Official time ? 1:01.
Zaldy Aroa of Bantayan Island caught Erwin Pulvera of Mandaue City with body shots with some regularity. In the third round, Pulvera turned his back prompting the referee to declare Aroa winner by TKO. Official time ? 1:33.
Sherwin Caday of Mandaue City beat Reymund Tabogon of Cagayan de Oro by split decision after four rounds. Tabogon was knocked down by an uppercut in the second round. The scorecards read ? 38-37 Tabogon and two judges had it 38-37 for Caday.
Ryan Maano of the Sanai gym of Mandaue City and Crispin Parba of Dumaguete City traded solid hooks and uppercuts for four gruelling rounds but it was Maano who won a four round unanimous decision. The scores ? 40-36, 39-37 and 39-37.
In the opening bout of the evening, Bebong Manalo of the Tony Dacer stable of Davao won by four round unanimous decision over Ronel Abing of Tagbilaran City. Abing went down in rounds three and four. The cores read 40-35, 40-36 and 39-35.
The Sunday night fights were held at the San Remegio Sports Complex courtesy of ALA Promotions and the local government of San Remegio lead by Mayor Jay Olivar. The bouts were supervised by the Games and Amusements Board of Cebu lead by Celso Miranda and Rolando Mendoza.
POSTSCRIPT:
In attendance was former WBO minimumweight champion Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes, who expects to fight for his second world title a couple of months from now.
Mancio?s effort will not earn him 5 million dollars or even 5 million pesos but it was a performance that brought back memories of the old school warriors of the 1950?s and 60?s.
