Oliva wins WBO Oriental miniflyweight crown

San Francisco, Southern Leyte ? Jether Oliva of the ABA Boxing gym of Davao beat Fernando Ocon of the RWS Stable of Cebu by unanimous decision in their twelve round battle for the vacant WBO Oriental Miniflyweight title last May 13 Friday in front of a packed house at the San Francisco multi-purpose gym.
Oliva (17W-0L, 11 KO?s) scored with a powerful left hook and had Ocon on unsteady legs in the second round. Ocon tried to make a fight out of it but Oliva has the edge in the power department. Ocon was deducted a point in the 5th due to an accidental headbutt that inflicted a cut on Oliva's left eyebrow. Ocon adjusted in the middle rounds but Oliva finished strong. The scores ? 116-112, 115-113 and 118-110. Ocon (7W-1L, 1 KO) suffered his first career loss.
Ciso ?Kid Terrible? Morales of Talibon, Bohol had his hands full for ten rounds before beating Eman Labanza of Catmon, Cebu by unanimous decision. Labanza mauled Morales and taunted him that he could take his punches in the early rounds.
In the middle rounds, Morales used lateral movement to stay out of trouble and his right hand lead against the southpaw Labanza. Morales hit and run tactic was effective but it did not please the crowd. It did, however, score points effectively and sway the judges in his favor. The scorecards read ? 97-94, 96-94 and 98-92.
This was Morales' first bout since he suffered his first career loss to Fernando Montiel last February 2010 in Las Vegas.
Rene Bestudio managed to hold the more accomplished Ramie Laput to a split draw. Laput, a former WBO Intercontinental superbantamweight champ, used his slick boxing skills against the aggressive and stronger Bestudio.
Laput rallied in the middle rounds as Bestudio started to tire but still kept on charging forward and throwing ounches. Laput's accurate counterpunching kept him in the fight. The scores ? 97-93 for Laput, 96-94 for Bestudio and 95-95.
Laput scored a big win at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu City last October when he outpointed Larry Canillas of the ALA Gym.
For the other supporting bouts:
Virgilio Silvano beat Lowell Saguisa by 5th round TKO. The two southpaws traded hard hooks for the opening round. Silvano suffered a cut on his left eyelid due to a headbutt and turned his offense up a notch. Saguisa's corner waived off the fight as he faded and was hit by a barrage of power punches at 2:35 of the 5th.
Aruel Romasasa knocked out Jerome Buntog in 2:59 of round two. A body punch sent Buntog down, who protested that he was head butted in the nose as the referee started to count instead of trying to get up.
JV Banares won by second round TKO over Jessie Comedia. A sharp left hook felled Comedia who got up on wobbly legs prompting his trainer to throw in the towel. Official time 1:55.
Junny Salogaol used a series of solid body blows to knock out Jovan Munoz at 2:59 of the first round.
In the first pro bout of the evening, Jerome Casas and Roldan Beriso had a fiercely fought unanimous draw after 4 rounds (38-38 all).
There were four pairs of amateur bouts. Janel Payao won by retirement in the second round over Glen Jay Alerea. Jordan Catubay won by RSC in round one over Gueller Alerea, Glen Don Allerea won on points over Tiboy Sereno, and Jefta Pinpin won on points over Rey Lorona,Jr. This boxing event billed as ?BAKBAKAN SA SAN FRANCISCO? was presented by SGG SPORTS PROMOTIONS and SAMPSON BOXING LLC in cooperation with the Municipality of San Francisco.
This was the first ever professional fight card held in this municipality. In attendance and supervising the bout was WBO Asia-Pacific chief Leon Panoncillo, who was also the fight supervisor of Manny Pacquiao vs Shane Mosley. The bouts were sanctioned and supervised by the Games and Amusements Board of Cebu lead by Celso Miranda and Rolando Mendoza.
