Cebu City ? Milan ?Metodico? Melindo of the ALA gym weighed in at the flyweight limit of 112 lbs but Rosendo Vega of Mexico was two pounds over the limit during the official weigh-in held at the Entertainment Center of SM Cebu City. But it was decided by the Filipino camp that they will not insist on Vega making the stipulated weight for their ten round non-title fight.
Melindo and Vega were civil compared to the other match-ups that had shoving matches. It was the pair Kenichi Yamaguchi of Japan and Marjohn Yap of the Philippines who first added color to the festivities when they engaged in a shoving match.
This made the spectators and photograpers scamper to get near the stage for a closer view of the action. Yap weighed in at 119 ? lbs while Yamaguchi weighed 120 lbs for their eight round battle.
OPBF flyweight champion Rocky Fuentes (115 lbs) of Mambaling, Cebu City and Jemmy Gobel (115 lbs) were relatively friendly and all smiles even if Fuentes playfully planted his dreaded left hook on the Indonesian?s jaw. They will fight in another non-title eight rounder.
Romeo Jakosalem stepped in at 137 lbs while his undefeated Canadian opponent Steve Claggett weighed 139 1/4lbs. Claggett was given an hour to shed the excess weight but not before they engaged in another shoving match. There seems to be real bad blood between the two which started during Thursday?s press
conference where they engaged in verbal sparring.
The extra-curricular activities made it difficult for the photographers and TV camera men to get a good angle as the animated crowd was just inches away from the fighters.
Claggett came back after less than half an hour and weighed at the stipulated 138 lbs. They will also fight for eight rounds. Claggett is trained by Filipino-Canadian Eric de Guzman, who decided to train in boxing because he got into a fight during hockey tryouts in Canada several years ago.
The co-main event for this card will be the 12 round WBO Asia-Pacific bantamweight title match between AJ ?Bazooka? Banal of the Philippines and Francis Miyeyusho of Tanzania. Banal stepped into the stage to the tune of his own theme song. The southpaw from Ermita,Cebu City weighed 118 lbs while his East African opponent was a quarter of a pound lighter. They also engaged in shoving and posturing.
Miyeyusho is trained by former Olympian Emmanuel Mlundwa, who also is the director of the Tanzanian Boxing Syndicate, the sanctioning body for pro boxing in their country.
Before the weigh-in,Banal was presented the WBO Asia Pacific 2010 Best Fight of the Year Award in recognition for his sensational knockout win over Big Yoo of Korea in Tagbilaran City last year in front of 30,000 spectators. The fight?s promoter,Michael Aldeguer, was also presented with an award by WBO Asia-Pacific chief Leon Panoncillo.
The undercards include Albert Pagara (115 ?) vs Pablo Rey Seneres (116 ?) 4 rounds, Boyce Sultan (121 ?) vs Francis Solis (125 3/4) 4 rounds and Roma Rate (110 ?) vs Camilo Rey Seneres (111 ?) 4 rounds. Fight day is Saturday at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Lahug,Cebu City. Fight time is 6 PM.
