Cebu City - Johnriel Casimero hasn?t been seen since he lost his WBO interim world lt.flyweight title to Ramon Garcia Hirales last July 24, 2010. He waited and just kept himself in shape by playing pick-up basketball. Then he got word of another shot at a world title.
Casimero is back in his home base, the Omega Boxing and Workout Gym in Mabolo, Cebu City. He told this writer Tuesday noon that he has begun sparring sessions and will step up his training for IBF flyweight champion Moruti Mthalane this March 26 in the champ?s backyard in South Africa.
So what happened in Mexico against Hirales?
? I got tired?but I can?t explain why.? He said.
Casimero trained hard for that fight. In fact he lived inside the old Omega boxing gym in Mandaue City. Whether it was the travel or the time difference, that is all a thing of the past. Now, Casimero looks at the future and another big opportunity.
Trainer Cristopher ?Pingping? Tepora and manager James Osorio are upbeat about their fighter?s chances. ?We have seen Mthlane?s fights. He once lost to Nonito Donaire.?, Tepora said.
Casimero is only 21 years old. Filipino fight fans had a glimpse of how good he can be against Cesar Canchilla of Colombia. He will have his work cut out for him against the 28 year old champion who has beaten current WBO flyweight champ Julio Cesar Miranda and erstwhile undefeated Zolani Tete in IBF title fights.
Casimero said that he currently ten pounds over the flyweight limit but will have no problem making weight now that he will intensify his training.
