Las Vegas Nevada:- On a cold balmy night in this glitzy city, Top Rank Promotions put up a fight card that was as exciting as the last one they put up exactly a week ago when Nonito Donaire dethroned Fernando Montiel at the Mandalay Bay Events Center and won the WBO-WBC Bantamweight titles.
The fight tonight was at the Palms Hotel and Casino, a place better known for Playboy bunnies than fight nights.
Undefeated top lightweight contender Brandon ?Bam Bam? Rios, (27-0-1,19KO) of Oxnard California was put up against the WBA champion from Venezuela, Miguel Acosta (28-4-2, 22KO).
Acosta dominated Rios early on with his lightning fast combinations and had the brawler from Oxnard behind on points. In fact he was so behind that even when Rios scored a flash knockdown in the 6th round, Rios was still behind in points.
Rios repeated the knockdown of Acosta in the 8th round and slowly begun to turn the tide over the champion who used the ring to frustrate the ever charging Rios. With the second knockdown Rios was energized and begun to stalk the fading champion.
In the 10th round Rios caught Acosta in his own corner and with four solidly placed shots on the head of Acosta, the champion just sunk in his own corner. The punches that Rios threw where four rapid lefts and rights?
Bam, bam, bam, bam and the corner of Acosta signaled a stop as his ward sunk to his corner, helpless and defeated.
Rios upon seeing his opponent immediately let lose his signature victory yell and jump in the waiting hands of his trainer, Robert Garcia.
With the win, Rios established himself amongst the top lightweights in boxing and gave Robert Garcia his second championship win in a row. Now he has WBO-WBC champion Nonito Donaire and WBA Lightweight champion, Brandio Rios.
