Once a year, locals and tourists fill the streets of Cebu and revel in street parties, concerts and dance to the beat of the Sinulog, the ?mother of all festivals? in the Philippines.

If you?re a boxing fan, there is the customary free-to-the-public fight card to look forward to. This year, there will be not one but two back to back boxing promotions that will surely satisfy the boxing aficionado?s appetite for mayhem.

Professional boxing will make a debut at the I.T. Park in Lahug, Cebu City this Saturday (Jan. 15) headlined by the ten round superfeatherweight match-up between James Bacon of the ALA Gym and Jake Verano of the Kaamino stable of Cagayan de Oro. The main protagonists made the contracted weight during the official weigh-in supervised by the Games and Amusements Board Friday noon.

Bacon (14W-2L, 10 KO's) weighed 126 lbs while Verano (20W-13L-3D, 10 KO's) weighed in at 128 lbs. For the supporting main event, Rolando ?Smooth Operator? Magbanua (19W-1L, 14 KO's) of the Braveheart Stable of North Cotabato weighed in at 119 lbs while Jason Egera (13W-5L, 6 KO's) of the Futalan stable of Siaton weighed 121 lbs. They will be fighting at 122 lbs. Egera is the reigning PBF superbantamweight titlist but his belt is not on the line for this bout.

Albert Pagara and Sandy Cajil both tipped the scales at 113 lbs or their 4 round superflyweight contest. Boyce Sultan weighed 119 lbs while Justin Gacos weighed 114 lbs for their four round bout, Jomar Cordinillo weighed 101 lbs while Marlou Talili weighed 104 lbs for their six round miniflyweight contest, Michael Romarate (109 lbs) and Rando Espeleta (110 lbs) will fight in a four rounder and Melvin Gumban (112 lbs) and Crispin Salvador (107 lbs) will open the evening's festivities in another four round tussle.

Pagara, Sultan and Romarate are three prized amateurs of the ALA Gym who will be making their pro debut. Fight time is at 7 PM. This fight card will mark the first salvo of the partnership between ALA Promotions and Cobra Energy Drink.

Then on Sunday, there will be three professional bouts plus twelve amateur contests at the Gaisano Country Mall Carpark. This is part of the continuing ALA-Summit Natural Drinking Water Fight Night Boxing Series.

The Sinulog festival is celebrated in honour of the image of the child Jesus or Santo Ni?o to the Catholic Cebuano devotees. There are religious processions aside from the colorful merrymaking highlighted by Sunday?s Sinulog grand parade.

Viva Pit Senyor!
