Las Vegas, NV: Oscar de la Hoya, at the post fight conference immediately after the fight, had aptly described the rumble between Amir Khan and Marcos Maidana as "a fight of the year.?
Well the Golden Boy may not be too far off.
The fight was indeed very exciting all throughout the 12 long rounds the two super lightweights exchange punches, from the knock-down scored by Amir Kahn in round 1, to the beating Maidana gave Khan in round 10. Incidentally, both rounds were scored as 10-8 by all of the judges, with Khan getting the nod in round 1 and Maidana, in round 10.
Amir Khan might have won the fight but he may have lost the battle.
Before the presscon, it was announced that Khan may not take questions as he needed to go to the hospital immediately as per recommendations of the NSAC doctors for precautionary cat-scan and thorough medical post fight check-up.
But, true to form when Khan came up the podium he took some questions albeit limited in number.
Khan begun by stating, ?those who say I got no chin I prove them wrong today.? He attributed it to to the focus, conditioning and hard work that he had in camp.
The Brit also admitted that he made some mistakes and he paid for them. ?I am still young and have lots to learn,? he said. ?The 10th round showed that I have a lot of heart,? he said when asked to comment about round 10.
Khan was also amenable to a rematch depending on what his promoters and managers will decide. ?A re-match will be great, he stated.
Maidana for his part stated that he was ?happy I made a good fight.? Maidana praised Khan for ?doing a good job in surviving? that made Khan come out as the winner.
?I came one punch short of winning,? he said but he also admired how Amir was ?able to take my punches.?
In reference to the good body punch that dropped him in round 1, Maidana said that ?it was a very good hard punch. I still can feel it now.?
What was most interesting to note was the difference in the post fight facial appearance of both fighters.
The punch stats indicated that that Khan connected more punches than Maidana. Khan had a 45% success rate in total punch connected vs. 20% from Maidana. And, he also connected more power punches than Maidana (53% vs. 25%).
However, post fight photos shows that Khan appeared to have more damage in his face than Maidana.
Could it be perhaps Maidana delivered stronger punches than Khan?
The post fight photos appears to support that.
