Anaheim, CA:- Nonito Donaire solidified his position to meet Fernando Montiel in spring of 2011 by doing exactly what he said he will do to the former WBA bantamweight champion, Vladimir Sidorenko of Ukraine.
Prior to the fight, the Filipino Flash promised to send a statement in his fight with the gutsy Ukrainian via scintillating stoppage reminiscent of what he did to the cocky Vic Darchinyan of Australia a few years ago.
Tonight at the Honda Center where hockey and concerts reign supreme over boxing, Donaire methodically beat Sidorenko to a pulp. He turned the face of Siderenko bloody red before putting his down in round 1 and round 3. Then he finally put him down for good in round 4 with blood freely flowing from the nose of the outclassed Ukrainian.
Judging from my experiences in addressing athletic injuries from sports, seeing Sidorenko squatting on the ring after a knockdown with blood profusely flowing from his nose, I am positive that he suffered a broken nose.
In fact, when we and the other photographers stepped up to the ring apron, to take post fight photos, we saw the volume of blood that came off the nose of Sidorenko. (above photo)
Later on when Team Sidorenko was on his way back to his dug out, I stopped his cutman, Joe Chavez and asked if indeed, my assumption about the broken nose was correct. According to him, the doctor indicated that in all probability Sidorenko had a broken nose. Of course that will be confirmed later after Sidorenko undergoes full postfight medical check up.
Donaire now takes a break for Christmas and will return early next year to training camp in preparation for the biggest fight of his life with Fernando Montiel.
Now that one will surely be a humdinger!
