Rocky Fuentes of Mambaling, Cebu City entered the ring with his stablemates waving the Philippine flag, his OPBF flyweight belt and the flag of his church, the Iglesia ni Cristo. Armed with his growing confidence and a cheering section chanting ?Rocky, Rocky, Rocky!?, he made an explosive homecoming title defense after three straight fights in Japan.
Fuentes landed a picture perfect left hook to the jaw of Thai challenger Inthanon Sithchamuang who fell face first into the canvas in the second round. Official time of the stoppage 2:19. This was Fuentes' third defense in a five month span.
A few weeks ago, former IBF mini-flyweight champ Florante Condes was asked by this writer if the Cebuano fans can finally see a knockout win from him. His fight against Kenichi Horikawa of Japan was his third appearance in Cebu. He had previously won by technical decision over Ronelle Ferreras in 2008 and a lopsided unanimous decision win over Sofyan Effendi last August.
Condes was reluctant to make a prediction but he did his talking in the ring and stopped the courageous bleeding Japanese in the 7th round. Horikawa was game and answered every shot that the Romblon southpaw threw. But a cut on Horikawa's left eyebrow inflicted by a punch in the 2nd round got bigger and blood continued to pour. In the 7th. the Japanese was eventually pinned to the neutral corner and series of unanswered blows prompted the referee to stop the fight at 2 min 40 sec of the round.
Fight fans expected more from Randy Suico and he was handed a smattering of boos after his majority decision victory over Arnel Tinampay in their eight round welterweight battle. The scores read : 78-74 and 77-75 for Suico and 76-76. Tinampay, who was Pacquiao's sparring partner in 2007, had a chance to pull off an upset but his punch output decreased in the last three rounds.
Dodie Boy Pe?alosa,Jr needed only one right hook and 32 seconds to dispose of Jomar Torreon in the opening round. This was Pe?alosa's second pro fight. Last January, he scored second round stoppage of Anthony Balubar in the undercard of the Brian Viloria vs Carlos Tamara IBF title fight in Pasay City.
Pe?alosa,Jr has championship boxing in his DNA. His father and uncle are former two division world champions.
Rey Melligen won by majority decision over Junel Gudapan. The scorecards read ? 39-37, 39-37 and 38 all.
Melvin Gumban won by unanimous decision over JR Salvador. All three judges scored it 39-37.
Th fight card dubbed as PINOY PRIDE was the last big ALA Promotions card at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel for 2010. In 2011, fans will get to see the rematch between Rey Bautista and Alejandro Barrera.
