Reading the reports that Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez and his fianc?e Marisol Gonzalez are heading to the altar soon brought memories of my trips with Team Rodel Mayol to Mexico.

The first was to Tuxla Gutierrez in far away Chiapas, Mexico. That was in November of 2009. Mayol challenged Edgar Sosa for the WBC Lightweight Title. During the weigh-in, a georgeous looking woman with a TeleVisa microphone approached me and asked if she can interview Mayol who was having his lunch right after the weigh-in. Who could say no to a beautiful woman?

That was when we first met Marisol Gonzalez, Alvarez? future wife. Gonzalez we would find out later was a former Miss Mexico and a represented her country in a Miss Universe contest.

Gonzales was not a typical gung-ho TV person. She was very nice, almost bordering to being formal. She conducted the interview in English. Although she did not have a lot to ask, her few questions to Mayol made the whole thing so memorable. At the very least Mayol made it on Mexican TV. And so did we who stood behind him as Gonzalez spoke to him.

Just before the fight with Sosa, she came to the dug-out and again did a live interview for Televisa and the Latin audience it serves. Again, it was a short but sweet interview and I have no doubt Mayol enjoyed his moment.

Mayol went on to beat Sosa via a 2nd round TKO and came home with the WBC Light flyweight title.

The second time we met Gonzalez was when Team Mayol came back to Mexico, to defend the title against hometown boy, Omar Nino Romero in the City of Guadalajara. Gonzales was there again doing her thing for TV.

She came to us right after the weigh in to do her routine interview. This time she was exceedingly friendly as she was familiar with us already. To our surprise, there were even ?beso-besos? just like we had been friends for many years. Of course her friendly demeanor put everybody at ease and the interview was a lot more extensive and she had a lot to ask. When the TV lights and the microphones were finally turned off, she stayed with us for a few more minutes for photos and simple friendly talk. Needless to say, Team Mayol enjoyed her company.

We all came away from that moment with nothing but good feelings about Gonzalez. She was a classy woman!
