TIMOTHY COLEMAN SCORES A THUNDERING KO AT CHUMASH

Sta.Ynes, CA:- Timothy Coleman, the Roger Mayweather-trained, Baltimore, Maryland-based USBA junior welterweight champion defended the title he won from Mike Arnaoutis in December 2009 with a thundering KO of Patrick Lopez of Venezuela last Friday night at the Chumash Casino Resort in this lovely bucolic town.
Coleman (18-1-1,5KO) initially dropped Lopez with a big right hand in round 2 but Lopez (20-3-0-,12KO), a former member of the Venezuela Olympic team, survived the round albeit visibly rocked.
In round 3, following instructions from his corner to up the power output on top of his tremendous speed, Coleman chased Lopez all over the ring leaving Lopez hanging for dear life. Then Coleman sneaked in a huge upper cut that landed flashed on the face of Lopez dropping him like a log face first. The end came at 2:13.
Coleman?s victory validated the adage;- ?speed kills?. Lopez simply did not have an answer against the flurry of punches that came from all angles delivered by Coleman ala Manny Pacquiao.
In the supporting main event, unbeaten Archie Ray Marquez (10-0-0,7KO) scored a TKO against Juan ?Chango? Santiago (13-5-1,8KOs). The fight was full of fireworks from the get-go with both fighters delivering and taking hard punches. In the middle of round 2, Marquez accidentally hit Santiago with a very low blow that dropped Santiago to his knees in agony. Referee Ray Corona seeing how Santiago reacted to the pain allowed him 5 minutes to rest. Before he allowed the fight to continue, he penalized Marquez, asking the judges to take away a point from him.
From this writer?s point of view, the low blow took a lot from Santiago. As soon as the fight was allowed to continue, Marquez swarmed all over the weakened Santiago finally flooring him with a barrage of punches.
Santiago it appears never really recovered from the effects of the low blow and the knock down. Thus in round 3 it appears he just gassed out allowing Marquez to pin him on the ropes almost helpless giving Corona an excuse to wave off the fight. Time was 11 seconds in round 3.
Junior middleweight Williams Julian (2-0-0,2KO) remained unbeaten in his short career. Williams scored a very quick 1st KO over Dean Peters, Jr. (1-3-0). The end for Peters came via a sweeping left hook that landed at the point of his chin. Peters tried very hard to stand up and beat the count but his legs just gave up on him. Referee David Mendoza waved off the fight at 0:24 seconds.
Gabriel ?Gapo? Tolmaijan,( 10-1-0,3KO) an Armenian born, Glendale, CA based featherweight scored a UD over Yogli Herrera (22-13-0, 15KO) highlighted by a flash knock-down in round 6 that did not appear to have hurt Herrera that much. The fight was a show of tactical skills which did not appeal to the crowd who hurled boos in an effort to encourage more exchanges from the fighters. But the fight continued lazily until it finally came to an end after 8 long rounds. The scores were 80-71 from Jerry Cantu and Sergio Caiz and a 78-72 from Jonny Davis.
In a fight between two women warriors, Amanda Crispin (3-2-1) won a very close split decision over Crystal Hoy (4-3-3, 2KO).
What was interesting for this writer to note was a point deduction on Crispin. Referee David Mendoza ordered the point deduction because her mouthpiece kept on coming off.
Mendoza?s action should merit the attention of other referees. They should not hesitate to do the same in similar circumstances. Mendoza should also be commended for having the wisdom to recognize the dangers of faulty mouthpieces and the point deduction should serve as a wake up call to all trainers and managers to pay better attention to the well being of their fighters. That includes getting them dentist-fitted mouthguards.
In a battle between two welterweights, Michael Anderson (8-0-1,6KO) won via a 4th round TKO over Angel Hernandez (14-8-0,11KO). Anderson floored Hernandez three times with body shots, twice in round 2 and for the final time in round 4. Referee Ray Corona waved off the fight at 0:51
Robb Guy, (1-0-0,1KO) a lightweight from Sacramento, CA made a successful debut with a first round TKO over Jose Pacheco.( 2-14-6) Guy did it with a hard right hand followed by a series of multiple punches that trapped Pacheco in a corner. Seeing that Pacheco has had enough, referee David Mendoza waved off the fight at 2:08.
For what ever it is worth, this writer is proud to say that Guy came up the ring proudly wearing a signature mouthguard custom made and fitted for him a week before the fight by the writer.
Further, it will be a tremendous mistake if nothing is mentioned about the fact that the only Filipino accredited boxing judge in the USA, Jonny Davis of Anaheim, CA served as a judge in all the fights for the evening. All seven of them!
It took a while for Davis to break in to system, so to speak. He had to prove himself by working small fights at the beginning. But now, mainstream boxing organizations do not even think twice in giving him huge assignments. The fight card tonight which was beamed live on ShowTime was one of them. Congratulations Jonny! May your tribe increase.
Finally, it was nice to see Dave McCullough, the VP for Finance for the IBF at the fight. McCullough, to those who don?t know him, is an IBF Director and Fight Supervisor.
