Former two division world champion Gerry Pe?alosa will make his ring return this October 10 at the at the Zamboanga City Coliseum in Zamboanga City against Yodsaenkeng Kietmangmee of Thailand. In a telephone interview, Pe?alosa said that this will be his last fight and the proceeds of this bout will be given to Z ?The Dream? Gorres to help him with his medical expenses.
?I want to help my friend Z. He is recovering well but is still spending a lot for his medical bills. He underwent surgery again recently.? Pe?alosa was referring to the series of medical operations on Gorres? throat.
Every Filipino is familiar with the story of Gorres, who was sidelined by a career-ending brain injury when he fought Colombian Luis Melendez in Las Vegas in November 2009. He underwent a throat operation last February at Cebu Doctor?s Hospital due to a mass of tissue that formed in the lining of his throat. Early this month, Gorres underwent another surgery at the same hospital to correct a portion of his windpipe that had narrowed down.
Fans and sponsors are encouraged to support Pe?alosa?s endeavor. Gerry?s victories gave us a reason to cheer during the pre-Pacquiao years. He was also part of the victorious 2007 Boxing World Cup squad that also saw him win his second world title against Jhonny Gonzales. Helping a friend in need would be the best ending for a career that spanned two decades.
The Filipino ?Bayanihan? spirit was showcased when Gorres needed help during his stay in a Las Vegas hospital ICU. Continuing to assist him also shows the good inside every Filipino.
Kietmangmee (12W-2L, 8 KO?s), is a former lt.flyweight champion Thailand and a former WBO Youth world lt.flyweight titlist. Also appearing in this card is Gerry?s protege, Michael Fare?as, who will face South Korean Jung-Hoon Kim.
