An aging former world champ gets pummeled by a hungry, younger and stronger fighter. That is the circle of life in boxing. Denver ?The Excitement? Cuello of the Aljoe Jaro Stable became the first boxer to stop former IBF minimumweight champ Muhammad Rachman of Indonesia when he scored a ninth round TKO win in their WBC international minimumweight title fight held in Iligan City last Saturday evening. The 38 year old Rachman (62W-9L-5D, 31 KO?s) and has never been knocked out in 75 fights. He went the full ten rounds in a losing effort to another rising prospect Milan Melindo, last year in Cebu City. Comparing him to Cuello?s previous opponents, Rachman had the best resume and was set to give the 23 year old Cuello a big test.
The southpaw Cuello, who also goes by the name Denver Singwangcha, passed his test with flying colors. He boxed smartly and darted in and out with his power shots . Rachman was forced into a defensive posture throughout most of the bout. A left straight by the Filipino decked Rachman in the fifth round. It was getting to be a one sided affair as Rachman was getting hit by a variety of head and body shots. Pride and conditioning kept him going.
In the ninth, Rachman was reeling from a brutal volley from the Filipino, prompting referee Bruce McTavish to stop the fight at the 1:03 mark. Cuello (22-4-5, 13 KOs), who hails from Ilioilo, retained his WBC international belt and will set his sights on the 105 lb division?s world title.
Rachman lost his world title to Florante Condes by split decision three years ago in Jakarta. Last year, he lost in his bid to win another world title against WBC strawweight champion Oleydong Sithsamerchai of Thailand by 11th round technical decision in a fight stopped due to cuts inflicted by headbutts.
Cuello went into boxing because he was inspired by Onyok Velasco?s Olympic silver medal finish in 1996. He has Velasco?s quickness but has more power. Brushing aside the unfortunate disqualification loss to Juan Hernandez, Denver has the potential to be a future world champ and could provide excitement in the post-Pacquiao world.
For the televised supporting bouts: Marvin Tampus Singwangcha of Bato, Leyte and the Aljoe Jaro stable won by 8th round KO over Joash Apericio of Bukidnon. Tampus? left hook knocked down Apericio in the 3rd and he followed up his offense with brutal body shots in the succeeding rounds. Tampus knocked down the faded Apericio for good in the 8th. Official time 1:15. Both boxers fought in Sibonga,Cebu last August, with Tampus winning by 1st round knockout over Aljon Salugaol and Apericio losing to Marco Demecillo by ninth round knockout.
Dondee Pumar Singwangcha of the Aljoe Jaro Stable knocked out Marvin Fernandez of Bukidnon with a single counter right hook in the first round. Pumar is from Cebu and is the brother of former WBC International minimumweight champ Gabriel Pumar. The boxers bear the surname Singwangcha as homage to their sponsor Thai Promoter Naris Singwangcha.
