Maasin City, Southern Leyte - Philippine Boxing Federation (PBF) featherweight champion Adonis Aguello of Maasin City and the T.I. Yamagata gym won by 6th round TKO over Victor Man-on of Bohol in the main event of a fight card held Monday evening at the Maasin City Gym.
Man-on started aggressively and charged with chopping hooks. Aguello countered with jab straight combinations in the second round as Man-on was also deducted a point for a series of low blows. Man-on continued to press the action but Aguello?s counters inflicted welts all over the challenger?s face who was also staggered at the end of the third round.
Man-on still wanted to continue to fight despite being at the receiving end of continuous punishment for two rounds and was visibly in trouble. In a spine-tingling sixth round, Man-on came out swinging and made one more desperate charge despite being exhausted and bleeding from the mouth. As the crowd rose and lustily cheered, Aguello landed a series of brutal punches prompting the referee to stop the fight at the 2:58 mark.
Jonathan ?Tata? Ricablanca of Surigao won by split decision against Jun Ferando of Maasin in an eight round lt. flyweight bout. It was a battle of jabs and feints in the first five rounds but the action stepped up as the protagonists exchanged heavy punches in the remainder of the bout.
Ricablanca was more consistent in his offense in the homestretch. The three judges? scorecards all read 77-75 with two going for Ricablanca and one for Ferando.
Robert Awitin of Bohol won by TKO over Jimbert Lamoste of Maasin in the first round of a four round bantamweight fight. Both boxers were tentative in the firt two minutes but a quick left from the southpaw Awitin found Lamoste?s jaw who staggered as he got up prompting the referee to call a halt at 2:30 of the opening round.
Amateur standouts from Maasin, Baybay and Matalom, Leyte opened the evening?s festivities. This boxing event was held as part of the City?s fiesta celebrations.
The fight card was supervised by Celso Miranda and Rolando Mendoza of the Games and Amusements Board (GAB Cebu) and presented by the Maasin City local govt. and the Maasin City Sports Council headed by Mayor Maloney Samaco and promoted by Rex ?Wakee? Salud International Boxing Promotions through the efforts of matchmaker Willie Flores.
