TID BITS FROM THE WEIGH-IN IN GUASAVE

Guasave, Sinaloa, Mexico: The promoters of Saturday?s big event, Eric Morales? Box Latino, in cooperation with Sampson Lewkowicz Promotions, LLC and the ALA Promotions held the weight in midday today near a busy street corner under a make shift tent. The place was along Calle Corrigedora, a very busy thoroughfare smack in the middle of downtown Guasave.

The Team was picked up from the hotel by the promoter?s rep in a rented 5 seat Toyota Tundra for the short drive to the place.

Needless to say, it was hot as heck and with the very high humidity, even under the shades of the trees in the area, the temperature was barely tolerable.

After a brief ?medical check?up? under the tent by a very resourceful fight doctor using the flash light in his cell phone to check the eyes, a blood pressure test and a stethoscope place at the back of the boxers to ?check respiratory function?, the fighters were led to the scales situated on top of a temporary stage that was less than steady.

Nietes? trainer Edito Villamor and this writer went up the stage before the fighters stepped on the scales and adjusted the scales as best as possible. As we were doing that, an official looking fellow came up to check what we were doing and told us with a smile in his face and the best way he could in English that we need not worry. Apparently, the weigh-in is just a low key event and they were not ?too strict? in going through the procedure. ?That?s how it is in this place?, he said. ?You need not worry.?

When the weigh-in proceeded, Donnie Nietes hit the scales exactly at 105 lbs while his opponent, Mario Rodriguez came in at 103.2 lbs.

Immediately after the weight in, Nietes was led to a shade and rehydrated with liquids and ?pedialite?. He was given some bananas and hard boil eggs before we all walked back to the hotel for a well deserved late lunch. The temperature was too hot to endure and we decided to walk back four blocks to the hotel instead of standing under the hot sun waiting for the promoters? rep to pick us up and drive us back to the hotel. Even the GMA crew walked back with us and filmed the Team as we strode back to the hotel.

Back at the hotel, Nietes enjoyed a home cooked chicken and vegetable soup courtesy of trainer Edmund Villamor.
