Larry ?Bon Jovi? Canillas (14W-2L, 12 KO?s) of Toledo City knocked out Prell Tupas (6W-6L-4D ) of Metro Manila in the very first round in a non-title bout held Tuesday evening July at the Lutopan Recreation Center. Canillas came out rocking from the opening bell and pinned Tupas in the neutral corner. A wicked right hook sent Tupas on his knees and the referee reached the count of ten at the 1:40 mark.
The ALA gym superbantamweight prospect has scored seven straight knockout wins. Last month, he knocked out Dexter Mendoza in two rounds in Mandaue City.
Jojo ?Flash? Intor stole the show and brought the house down with his antics. He also showed he had power and won by 4th round TKO over Romano Gelig of Bohol in a rough and tumble six round superbantamweight contest. Gelig was knocked down in round one and Intor relentlessly pursued him all over the ring. Official time ? 59 seconds 4th round.
In an early meeting of promising flyweight prospects Marjun Macahilig outlasted Mark Anthony Geraldo to win by unanimous decision after 8 rounds. It was a fast paced chess match from the opening bell as they took turns leading and countering.
Low blows from Geraldo action slowed the action in the 6th as Macahilig started to pull away. Macahilig scored a knockdown in the final round as Geraldo wilted in the endgame. The scorecards read ? 78-73,77-74 and 78-75 for Macahilig.
Junior welterweight Naozumi Tsukiyama of Tokyo, Japan decked Jojo Arnado of Cagayan de Oro in the opening round with a left hook to the body then unloaded a brutal barrage as Arnado was pinned to a corner prompting the referee to stop the fight and declare the Japanese the winner at 2:25 of the first round.
Tsukiyama fought with a prosthetic right leg which is a first here in the Philippines.
Richard Areta won by four round majority decision over Mark Jesson Taroja in a slam bang bantamweight affair. The scores ? 39-37 and 39-37 for Areta and one judge had it 38-38.
In the first pro bout of the evening superflyweight Jicky ?Batang Boljoon? Gako beat Charlie Sabijon by unanimous decision in 4 rounds.
The festivities were started by foru amateur bouts featuring boxers from Toledo City and Cebu City. It is no coincidence that the two winning boxers from Toledo bear the surname Canillas.
