MAYOL, ROMERO MAKE WEIGHT

San Juan del Rio, Queretaro, Mexico: Zanfer Promotions held the official weigh-in for tomorrow?s fight card in this quaint Mexican city.

The crew set up the stage right next to an old Catholic church. With that Mike Koncz who is representing the MP Promotions for this fight jokingly warned Team Mayol to ?give your best behavior, we are next to a church.?

Really, I have seen many ?weigh-in? events before, but today?s was the ?holiest ever?.

How could it not be? It?s almost on the church grounds.

Team Mayol got to the place about 15 minutes before the event started. That gave trainer Jesse Arevalo and this writer, who is Mayol?s cut-man to check out the scales.

The scales they used was an old fashioned one. In fact it really looks very old and used but still usable.

The first thing I noticed was it was not calibrated right. So I called Arevalo?s attention and being Spanish speaking, he informed those who were in-charged to set the scales correctly.

That exactly what they did.

Being the champion, Mayol was given the privilege to come to the scales first. When Mayol took off his Team jacket a huge roar came from the crowd. Mayol was wearing a sleeveless white t-shirt with the words ?Viva Mexico? printed in front. The t-shirt was the idea of Arevalo and this writer hand painted it for Mayol.

Mayol even with the t-shirt tipped the scales at exactly 108 pounds. When he took it off, the scale moved a bit so logically, he must have been about 107.8 lbs. Officially however he was listed as 108 lbs.

Nino Romero, on the other hand, stepped on the scales with just his underwear. Even with that, the scale did not stay still on center indicating that perhaps, he was a hair over-weight. Officially, he was listed as 108.lbs.

Team Mayol saw the slight overweight in Nino Romero but they just let it slide given that the scale was very old and may have not been 100% accurate. At any rate, what ever little weight Nino Romero had over the stipulated limit of 108. lbs really did not matter and won?t change anything in the fight.

Immediately after the weigh-in, Mayol retreated under a lemon tree on the church grounds and eat his first full meal for the day. He also took in a lot of Gatorade, pedialite and water.

After eating, he posed for photos and signed autographs until our ride came to take us back to La Venta Hotel Hacienda a few kilometers from the town center where the event was held.
