Sultan leaves today for PABA bout

Philippine welterweight champ Dondon Sultan flies for Thailand today as he takes yet another chance at glory when he trades leathers with Pan-Asian Boxing Association (PABA) welter titlist Pakphum Chengphonak for the latter's belt on Monday in Bangkok.

Sultan, who trained at the ALA Gym for the fight, will be accompanied by manager Sammy "Don King" Gello-ani and ALA chief trainer Edito Villamor.

In an interview yesterday, Sultan revealed that he sparred with OPBF champ Randy Suico, WBF titlist Dindo Castanares, fellow RP champ Bart Abapo, and top-ranked junior lightweight Caesar Amonsot to prepare for this Thai foe.

"I'm very hungry for a win. I hope my opponent does not run because I'm going there to fight. Please don't run Mr. Chengphonak," Sultan pleaded.

Sultan (11-5-2, 6 KO's) is coming off a seventh-round technical knockout loss at the hands of Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) welter ruler Kazuhiko Hidaka last July 21, and had vowed to redeem himself with a victory over the Thai champ.

"When i fought Hidaka, I did not really follow my fighting style, as i was forced to brawl with him. I'm more of a counter-puncher, so I hope my strategy will work this time around," said the Labason, Zamboanga del Norte native.

The unbeaten 30-year-old Chengphonak is the former 1998 Asian Games gold medalist who competed twice in the Olympic Games. He captured the PABA crown by disposing of Filipino Christopher Saluday last May 30.
