Rodel Mayol.
When told about news reports indicating that Omar Nino Romero (the Mexican challenger scheduled to face WBC Junior Lightweight title-holder Rodel Mayol) predicts that he will knockout Mayol, the Filipino champion humbly stated - ?Nino can say anything he wants to say to the media, but it does not bother me. When the bell rings, all of his words will mean nothing. It?s just him and me on top of the ring. Nothing and no one can help him. We will see then if he can back up his boast.?
Mayol will be defending his WBC crown against the Guadalajara slugger for the second time. The fight is scheduled at Plaza de Toros at Queretaro, Mexico on June 19th. The promoter is Zanfer Promotions a well-established Mexican promotions company.
The first time they met, their fight was declared a ?technical draw? after Nino Romero committed a foul and knocked-out Mayol with a late illegal blow.
Theoretically, since Romero committed the foul AFTER the referee (American Vic Drackulich) ordered him to stop, Romero should have been disqualified and Mayol declared the winner. But as fate has it, the WBC in a compromise, declared the fight a ?technical draw? and mandated a rematch. Thus, the two warriors will square up again.
The WBC decision which was actually handed down by Vice President Mauricio Sulaiman who was supervising the fight, in this writer?s view, saved the face of Drackulich.
The American referee was slow to react to the initial illegal blow ( a very low blow) delivered by Romero, thus giving Romero time to deliver the second illegal blow that KO?d the unprotected Mayol. In addition, he was indecisive in face of a crisis and he played safe by counting out Mayol when he knew that the knockout was delivered by an illegal punch. He could just as easily disqualified Nino Romero.
But as the saying goes, ?there is no need to cry over spilled milk? thus Team Mayol has put that incident aside and is now concentrating on the training camp.
As a result, Mayol is in excellent shape - mentally and physically. In fact, on the required 30 day before the fight weigh-in, Mayol is well inside the allowed 10 pounds over the fight weight limit.
It is interesting to note that nothing was mentioned about Nino Romero?s weight for the same period.
Mayol is doing so well in training and weight management that he can enjoy the food his lovely wife Lira cooks for him every evening without any restrictions.
?Maganda ang training camp? ( the training is beautiful?) assistant trainer Moray Quijano said. Wala kahit ano mang maliit na problema? (we don?t even have small problems) he added.
Nino Romero predicting a knock-out?
He could be right.
But, he may well be the one spread on the canvas looking up to the lights.
