Boxing fans will focus their attention this weekend on Cebu which has two exciting fight cards courtesy of ALA Promotions. On Saturday May 22, big time boxing returns to the Mandaue City Sports Complex with Best of Boxing I, headlined by former WBC strawweight champion Katsunari Takayama of Osaka, Japan.
Takayama has signed with a promotional contract with the Cebu-based company. He was already seen practicing at the ALA gym last January. He will be facing Jayson Rotoni of Makati City in a ten round non-title bout.
If he hurdles Rotoni he plans to challenge IBF Champion Nkosinathi Joyi of South Africa. Takayama is no stranger to Filipino boxers having beaten Rollen del Castillo, Elmer Gejon, Fabio Marfa and Mating Kilakil.
Fighting in the undercard in Mandaue City is power punching Larry ?Bon Jovi? Canillas of Toledo City. He will figure in a ten round fight against Dexter Mendoza of Manila.
Also making an appearance is the Clown Prince of Cebu Boxing Jojo ?Flash? Intor. He will face Mark Jesson Taroja in a six rounder.
On May 23, Filipino fight fans will finally get to see Luis Melendez, the Colombian boxer who sent Z Gorres into retirement.
Michael Domingo of the ALA Gym will enter the ring with pressure, emotion and the expectations of an entire nation. His ten round fight against Melendez has been aptly named ?Hangad na Paghihiganti? (Desire for Revenge).
Other stars from the ALA Gym will see action in the undercard: The recharged and reloaded Jimrex ?The Executioner? Jaca will face James Kimori of Kenya in a ten round bout, Jason Pagara will fight Romeo Jakosalem in another ten round contest and James Bacon will fight Cerilo Espino in an eight rounder.
Domingo vs Melendez will be held at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Lahug, Cebu City.
