Carson, CA: Paul ?The Punisher? Williams won a hollow technical split decision over Kermit ?The Killer Cintron?. The fight lasted less than four rounds.
Williams who enjoyed a long wing span over the Puerto Rican, used his longer reach to the max. He fought from the outside shooting his jabs and straights from a distance.
Cintron whose best hope to win the fight was to knock out Williams for some reason did not elect to carry the fight to his taller opponent. He was content to shoot counter punches with only some success.
In round four, after a furious exchange, Williams and Cintron got locked up together. Their momentum threw Williams to the floor. Cintron in an effort to avoid the fallen Williams trip on his foot and his momentum took his right through the ropes and fell on the table of the officials, hit his head and fell to the ground. As a result of the accident, Cintron hurt his neck and his shoulders.
Although Cintron apparently wanted to continue, the ring side doctor who saw the whole thing including the moment Cintron hit his head decided otherwise. He called the paramedics and they took Cintron away in a gurney and then to an ambulance that took him to a hospital.
At the time of the accident, the judges scores were 39 to 37 and 40 to 36 for Williams. The other judge scored the fight to that point as 40-36 Cintron.
Since the fight did not go four full rounds and one of the fighters was unable to continue due to an injury, California rules stated that they should go to the score cards. Thus Williams was declared the winner by technical split decision.
In the supporting main event, Martin Honorio of Mexico City gave a good account of himself against a former Olympian from the Dominican Republic, Argenis Mendez. But at the end, his efforts were not enough and the judges gave the fight to Mendez. Mendez thus won the USBA Junior Lightweight title.
The scores were 116-112, 116-112 for Mendez and the other was 112-112. Mendez improves to 16-1-0-9KO) while Honorio dropped to 28-5-1, 14KO.
It is interesting to note that one of the judges was the very reliable, Jony Davis who is now based at Anaheim, California.
Stan Martyniouk (9-0-0, 1KO) won via a six round split decision over Brian Ramirez (5-3-0, 3KO)
Scores were 57-56, 57-56 for Martyniouk and 57-56 for Ramirez.
Jeremiah Wiggins (8-0-1, 3KO) won via a unanimous decision over Juan Diaz (9-10,0, 6KO) of Neza, Mexico.
Michael Ruiz (2-0-0, 1KO) knocked out Jose Pacheco ( 2-13-0, 6KO), at 1:37 of the second round.
Mike Dallas (14-0-1,5KO) won via a TKO over Daniel Gonzales ( 9-29-2,3KO) when the referee stopped the fight at 2:03 in the second round.
Walter Sarnoi (6-0-0, 2KO) kept is record clean with split decision win over Adrian Aleman (6-7-3, 4KO)
Scores were 40-36, 39-37 and 38-38.
