Undefeated World Boxing Council no. 1 minimumweight contender Rodel Mayol of the Philippines will face Mexican Lorenzo Trejo in an eliminator to decide the next challenger for the WBC crown.
This was the result of the deliberations made at the on-going WBC Convention in Cadiz, Spain, where Jose Sulaiman and his Board of Governors announced that Mayol versus Trejo is set to take place on November 26 in Japan or January 21 in the United States.
If both camps fail to come up with a final date and venue, the WBC is set to call for a purse bid, which was originally scheduled last October 5 but was cancelled after both camps asked for a postponement.
The OPBF champ Mayol (21-0, 16 KO's), nicknamed "Batang Mandaue", is currently training in Japan under the supervision of his new manager Yasuo Matsuoka, a Tokyo-based businessman.
The 28-year-old Trejo (22-12, 9 KO's), nicknamed "Explosivo," is a native of Ciudad Obregon, Mexico and holds the NABF minimumweight title.
"According to Joe Koizumi, it will be held in January, with the winner becoming the mandatory challenger to WBC champ Eagle Kyowa," informs GAB chairman Eric Buhain, who is representing the Philippines at the WBC's annual conclave held this year in Spain.
Also ruled by the WBC was for newly-crowned light flyweight boss Brian "Hawaiian Punch" Viloria to defend his title against Juanito Rubillar. The winner will then defend against Thai Wandee Singwancha.
