The much anticipated May 1st showdown between Michael ?Bruce Lee? Domingo of the ALA Gym of Cebu and Luis ?Surtigas? Melendez of Colombia has been moved to May 23.
Melendez (26W-5L-1D, 21 KO) achieved notoriety among Filipino fight fans when he sent Z Gorres to the hospital for emergency neurosurgery last November in Las Vegas. He is no stranger to world class opposition. Melendez lost to Fernando Montiel in a WBO superflyweight world title fight by 12th round TKO but not before knocking down the Mexican champ in the 7th round.
Another familiar name on Melendez? resume is recent Cebu visitor Cecilio ?Boga? Santos. Melendez lost to Santos by 11th round technical decision in a WBO Latino superflyweight title fight last February 2007. Santos lost by 4th round knockout to AJ Banal last January 14, 2010.
Domingo (39W ? 14 L ? 2D, 17 KO?s) is a former Philippine and WBO Oriental bantamweight champion. He has been sent to Japan as part of his training for this fight. Domingo is the chief sparring partner of World Boxing Council bantamweight champ Hozumi Hasegawa. The Japanese champion is preparing for a unification bout against WBO champion Fernando Montiel.
Domingo versus Melendez will still be held at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino in Lahug, Cebu City. One of the undercard bouts will feature Jimrex Jaca against James Kimori of Kenya.
