BUMP IT UP A NOTCH, CHINO!

Just before the Pacquiao?Clottey fight at Arlington, Texas some two weeks ago, a very good friend who is a respected boxing judge and a writer par excellence, sent me a text advocating amongst other things the appointment of Chino Trinidad as Chairman of the Philippine Games and Amusement Board.

Of course I could not have agreed more!

Chino Trinidad will make an excellent Chairman of the GAB. The guy has the right necessities to carry on the demanding and oftentimes thankless job as GAB Chairman.

Trinidad has demonstrated unprecedented leadership that is very fair and tremendously effective when he was at PBL, as well as talents to ?play the game? so to speak, with the different owners, officials and players of the PBL to bring difficult issues about the league to satisfactory conclusions.

That alone qualifies him to be the next GAB Chairman.

But the thing that best qualifies him for the job is his honesty and genuine concern for athletes. Plus his experiences at the PBL made him see sports from a wider horizon.

I know for I have spoken to him about the issue when we were both at Texas for ?The Event? at the Cowboy Stadium.

With Trinidad at the helm of the GAB, positive changes can be made that will surely benefit the sports community at large.

For one, I know that health issues as well as insurance to assure that athletes such as boxers who offer their lives for the glory of the country will be well taken cared of after they go past their primes, will be on the forefront.

I am sure Trinidad has many other talents in his bag that qualifies him to be the Chairman of GAB. Without doubt, in the weeks and months to follow after our national elections and new a President sits at the Palace, more things in his resume will be brought out in the open that will make his appointment a lot easier and palatable for a politically sensitive country such as the Philippines.

In short, Chino Trinidad is qualified for the job. No argument there.

So suffice it to say at this juncture, the ball to start the inner workings that will lead to his appointment after May 10th has been rolled. And, as someone who shares his sentiments regarding issues to improve the lives of our athletes, I consider it an honor to be the first one to bring it out in the open.

I know many who have ambitions of their own will disparage me. But that does not matter. The guy is qualified and I believe he can do the job.

I am sure TV network GMA will be more than glad to let a talent like Trinidad leave their fold and without doubt the leadership at that respected broadcast station knows that losing Trinidad as a GMA mainstay to the GAB is for the betterment of the country and its athletes.

So to Chino Trinidad I say:- Bump it up a notch and don?t be shy in letting everyone know that you want the job and will gladly accept it if offered to you by the next President.

It does not help to be passive. You are the best man for the job so go for it. Everyone know darn well, yourself included, that if you get appointed it?s not about your personal triumph. It is about what is good for our country?s athletes.

Good luck and God speed my friend. Many of us are behind you.
