Melligen was riding on a string of 10 victories dating back from April of 2007 until be got waylaid by Michael Rosales at the House of Blues Club at the Mandalay Bay Hotel last November 13, 2009. That day is best remembered as the day when another ALA Boxing Gym boxer, Z Gorres suffered a career ending brain damage after winning his fight.
The defeat against Rosales was turned into a positive by Melligen with the help of his British-born trainer, Tony Martin. It motivated him to train harder and stayed focus on his fight with Gatica. As a result, he stopped Gatica in round 6th of a planned 8 round fight.
Melligen’s training in Vegas has been buoyed by the experiences he gained sparring with boxers at the Mayweather Gym including Floyd Jr. himself.
Other Top Rank boxers to be featured in the fight card includes Diego Magdaleno who will exchange leathers with Manny Perez and Lamont Peterson who will tangle with Damian Fuller.
