The Sportswriters Association of Cebu (SAC) paid homage to its treasured prize fighters and athletes lead by Z ?The Dream? Gorres of the ALA Gym who was the recipient of the ?Presidential Award? Thursday evening at the Casino Espa?ol de Cebu.

Gorres, who is continuing his rehabilitation after emergency neurosurgery and prolonged hospital stay in the U.S., was cited for his miraculous survival and courage. He has become a source of inspiration to us all.

Boxing patron and patriarch of the ALA Gym Antonio L. Aldeguer was the guest of honor and inspirational speaker of the event and he praised Gorres for being a champion in and out of the ring.

Gorres? stablemate, WBO minimuweight champion Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes was one of the major honorees for boxing for his singular and difficult feat in 2009 wherein he scored back to back successful title defenses in Mexico against Erik Ramirez and Manuel Vargas.

Johnriel Casimero of the Omega Boxing Gym of Mandaue City was honoured for his WBO interim lt.flyweight title win in Nicaragua against Cesar Canchila of Colombia last December. He is now back in training to prepare for WBO lt.flyweight champ Ivan Calderon of Puerto rico.

WBC lt.flyweight champion Rodel Mayol of Mandaue City was also a major awardee but he is currently in Los Angeles. Mayol won the title from Edgar Sosa of Mexico last November 2009 by second round TKO.

Another ALA boxer, Milan Melindo was given a special citation for his breakthrough performance against former IBF miniflyweight champ Muhammad Rachman of Indonesia in a fight held at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu City last March 2009 and won another difficult fight against tough Mexican Guadalupe Martinez in Pasay City seven months later.
