DARCHINYAN BEATS GUERRERO, KEEPS TITLES

Rancho Mirage, CA -- Tonight at the dry desert city near the famed City Palm Springs, Gary Shaw Promotions put up a double title fight.
Headlining the fight was the cocky Armenian from Australia, Vic Darchinyan (34-2-1,27KO) who defended his titles against a relatively young new comer who until tonight had barely 15 fights, Rodrigo Guerrero ( 13-2-1.9KO) of Mexico City.
Darchinyan was supposed to dispose off the young Mexican. But the youngster had other plans. He came to fight and just like a typical Mexican fighter, he came for more is spite of getting hit with booms from pillar to post.
“I thought I lost, but I did really good. Now people will know who I am and I did not come here to lose or fall. I thought the fight was close and the head butts did most of the damage. He did not really hurt me,” Guerrero stated after the fight.
“The kid is gonna be a good fighter. If I do not fight Donaire next, this is my last fight at 115 lbs.," Darchinyan said.
From our viewpoint, Darchinyan’s age is catching up with him. He no longer have the usual zip in his punches as evidenced by the way Guerrero took them.
If Darchinyan will fight Nonito Donaire the way he fought tonight, he does not have a prayer. Donaire will surely beat him.
Moving up to higher weights may not be such a good idea for Darchinyan. If his punches at 115 can not bring down a young fighter like Guererro, he will have a hard time at 118 and above.
He best stays at 115 and clean up the division and then call it a day.
The judge’s scores were: CJ Ross- 118-110, Max de Luca- 117-111 and Marty Denkin-120-108.
The in other title fight for the IBO Lightweight Title, Lenny Zappavigna of Australia beat Fernando Angulo (26-7-0, 14KO) of Caracas, Venezuela. With the win, Zappavigna kept his record clean. He now stands at 23-0-0, 15 KO)
Zappavigna fought gallantly in spite of cuts on both eyes, one occurring at round 8 and the other at round 11.
In the ninth round Angulo was deducted a point by referee Pat Russel. If that did not happen, the fight would have been a majority decision instead of a UD because one of the judges, Joni Davis of Cebu and is now based in Anaheim, California, scored the fight at 114-113.
The other two judges however turned in similar scores of 116-111.
From our view point Davis’ score told the real story. The fight could have gone either way the scores of the other two judges notwithstanding.
