Marvin Sonsona of the Philippines and Wilfredo Vasquez,Jr. of Puerto Rico met face to face once again during the final press conference held Wednesday in Puerto Rico to promote their WBO superbantamweight title fight this February 28 ( R.P. Time) billed as ?Making History.?
?I am physically and mentally prepared for this combat. We have taken in serious training and I am in the best condition possible.?, said V?zquez Jr, who if he wins, will make history as the first pair of Puerto Rican father and son to crown themselves champion. Wilfredo,Sr., his father won three titles in three different weight divisions.
?We are focused and when we enter the ring, Sonsona is going to see that it was a mistake in wanting to fight me.? the 25 year old Vasquez continued.
Sonsona, a former WBO superflyweight champion, countered with ?I feel very well with this weight. I have all the tools to defeat to V?zquez and I have much more experience than he.?
The 19 year old Sonsona, who is trained by Nonito Donaire,Sr. has been in Puerto Rico for more than a week. If he wins, he will make history by being the youngest Filipino boxer to win two world titles in two different weight divisions.
Sonsona won his first world title last year by beating a Puerto Rican, Jose ?Carita? Lopez by 12 round unanimous decision in Canada but lost it after weighing 2.6 lbs over the limit in his first title defense.
Both Vasquez and Sonsona were on target with their weights one week before the official weigh-in. But one of interesting questions that will be answered during fight time is whether the Gen. Santos City southpaw still has power at 122 lbs considering that his two fights at 115 lbs reached the twelve round distance. The Puerto Rican Vasquez on the other hand has been fighting in this weight category for a while now.
The president of the WBO, Francisco Valc?rcel informed that the referee of the V?zquez-Sonsona encounter will be Luis Pab?n, whereas the judges will be Carlos Columbus, Tom Miller and Michael Pernick. This fight is promoted by PR Best Boxing Promotions in association with All Star Boxing, SGG Promotions and Sampson Boxing LLC and that it will be transmitted by ?Pay Rep View? to more than 40 countries.
