LAS VEGAS -- Bernabe Concepcion’s hard grind at the Wildcard Gym under the aegis of Buboy Fernandez paid dividends Saturnday night with his not too surprising win over Puerto Rico’s Mario Santiago.
Concepcion fought Santiago tooth and nail showing that he has what it takes to be a champion some day. It was not pretty, but in the end the former prot?g?e of Aljoe Jaro made up for the mistake he made during his last fight in the city where he threw a punch after the round expired and knock out Steven Luevano. For that error, he got disqualified.
But things were different Saturday. Concepcion showed that he was hungry and he kept the game plan in spite of the difficulties presented by the Puerto Rican. He even scored a knock-down on the 6th round. Thus, he ended on the long side of the stick with a clean unanimous decision. Scores are: 98-91,96-93 and 97-92.
With is victory, Concepcion is now 30-2-1, 17 KO while Santiago fell to 21-2-1, 14K0.
Pundits at the ring side however feel that Concepcion should take a fight or two before he takes on Juan Ma Lopez. They feel that he needs to improve on many things, notably his jabs and his work rate before he may be ready for Juan Ma.
