It doesn’t happen in every fight card that a boxer’s first professional fight gets coverage in Philboxing. But fight fans old enough to remember the father - who despite having one shorter leg due to childhood polio, won two world titles in two different weights - would be pleased to know that Dodie Boy Pe?alosa, Jr. made a smashing pro debut at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City Saturday.

In a six round super bantamweight bout, Pe?alosa won by second round knockout over Anthony Balubar. In the opening round the southpaw Pe?alosa showed good footwork and power as he scored a knockdown with a counter right hook as Balubar was going in. A two fisted barrage followed when Balubar got up.

In the second round, Balubar collapsed in the neural corner after a series of combinations. Pe?alosa celebrated in the opposite corner but Balubar got up. Pe?alosa finished the job when he dropped Balubar with a left hook to the liver.

Pe?alosa turned to the crowd and raised his hands signaling victory as the referee reached the count of ten at 2:21 of the 2nd. His father Dodie was his cornerman. The elder Pe?alosa has said that he doesn’t want to rush things when it comes to his son’s career. But one thing for sure Dodie, Jr. is definitely a prospect to watch.

His uncle Gerry will fight Eric Morel in a WBO bantamweight eliminator next month.

POSTSCRIPT:

This fight was in the undercard of the Brian Viloria vs Carlos Tamara IBF jr. flyweight title bout. Tamara came from behind to win by TKO over an exhausted Viloria in the final round. Philboxing attended the post fight press conference which also had WBO 105 lb. champ Donnie Nietes and Mexico’s Jesus Silvestre.

We were not able to cover the bouts that were shown after the main event because of the said presscon. But these were the other preliminary bouts that we witnessed before we had to rush our fight reports, return to Cebu and beat the traffic to the airport:

Jose Ocampo won by KO in round 2 over Roselito “Castigo” Campana. Ocampo scored a knockdown in the opening round and powerful left hand shot dropped Campana for the full count in 2: 14 of the second round.

Undefeated lighweight Jay Solmiano won by TKO over Daryl Pucdol who chose to stay in his corner after round two.

Ivan Soriano won by majority decision over Jomar Tumbaga in a four round minimumweight bout. The scores – 39-39, 40-36 and 39-37.

While waiting for the presscon to start, we saw in the press room TV monitor jr.welterweight Dennis Laurente winning by TKO in 1;14 of the 2nd round over Laimungkorn Chuwatana of Thailand.
