WBC light flyweight champion Rodel Mayol will return to Mexico to face former champion Omar Nino Romero this February 27.
The 33 year old Romero, from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, is best known for dethroning Brian Viloria in an upset unanimous decision win in 2006. He held Viloria to a majority draw in their rematch but failed a post fight drug test.
He lost to Filipino Juanito Rubillar by split decision in a title eliminator in 2008 but beat Rubillar by 8 round technical decision last June 2009 and is once again in the title picture.
The 28 year old Mayol initially wanted to fight in Las Vegas in the undercard of the Mayweather-Pacquiao mega-fight. Mayol informed this writer through e-mail that because the fight will not push through, he will have to defend his title in Nayarit,Mexico.
Last November, Mayol won the WBC lt.flyweight world title with a second round TKO over Edgar Sosa in Chiapas, Mexico.
