?They both have a good chance of winning.? Nonito Donaire,Sr. was upbeat about his assessment as Ciso Morales and Marvin Sonsona continue to perform well during training.
?Kid Terrible? Morales will be a heavy underdog against WBO Bantamweight champ Fernando Montiel of Mexico when they fight in Las Vegas on February 13.
?Ciso?s conditioning has improved but he will need more rounds in sparring.? Donaire communicated by e-mail. ?Sonsona just got back from Puerto Rico and we?ll resume training immediately.?
?They have been sparring with heavier boxers here at the Kennel Boxing Gym. But I don?t ask Ciso and Marvin to spar against each other.? He added.
The San Leandro, California based gym is Donaire?s base of operations when he is in the U.S.
Sonsona was in Bayamon, Puerto Rico for a press conference and open work out to promote his fight against Wilfredo Vasquez,Jr for the vacant WBO superbantamweight title. The Gensan southpaw will also be the underdog when he fights in Vasquez? home turf. The Puerto Rican has excellent skills as well as pedigree; he is the son of a former three division world champion.
Donaire,Sr. finished 2009 on a high note when, together with Pingping Tepura, he orchestrated the WBO interim lt.flyweight title win of relative unknown Johnreil Casimero over Cesar Canchila of Colombia in Managua, Nicaragua.
Last September 14, Donaire was in the corner of Anna ?The Hurricane? Julaton when she beat Kelsey Jeffries to win the IBA superbantamweight belt and made history by becoming the first female Filipino-American to win a world title.
For more than a month, Donaire joined forces with Jun Agrabio to sharpen Marvin Sonsona - who had never gone past the fifth round and whose name was known only to the die-hard local boxing aficionados - to his WBO superflyweight title win against Jose ?Carita? Lopez of Puerto Rico in Ontario, Canada last September 5.
Donaire, Sr. was also a cutman for Michael Katisidis when the Australian won the interim WBO lightweight title. His recent performance as a cornerman proved that his son?s earth shaking KO of Vic Darchinyan in 2007 was not a fluke.
Simply put, if you want to plan an upset, Nonito Donaire,Sr. is the man to go. Most boxing pundits in Cebu would have easily dismissed Morales? title shot as a lost cause if it wasn?t for the fact that Donaire is his cornerman.
Bringing Sonsona?s focus back will be his biggest challenge as a trainer. The 19 year old is an extremely talented boxer and his handlers hope that making him train outside the Philippines will erase all of his distractions. He has been the subject of speculation since he lost his title at the scales and struggled with a split draw against Alejandro Hernandez of Mexico last November 2009.
Both Vasquez and Sonsona have yet to suffer a loss; somebody?s O must go. Can Donaire make him ?Marvellous? again this September 27?
