Many in the boxing world are familiar with Michael Koncz as being the “liaison” of Team Pacquaio to Top Rank Promotions.
Or is it the other way around?
That is, Koncz is Bob Arum’s “inside man” on Team Pacquiao.
Whatever it is, now we will see how much is the significance of Koncz to both Team Pacquiao and the Top Rank Promotions.
And, we will see how far he is going to go to satisfy the wishes of his boss, Pacquiao.
During Manny Pacquiao’s birthday at GenSan last week, we were told that Rodel Mayol, the newly crowned WBC Light Flyweight champion personally asked Manny Pacquiao to include him on the undercard of the proposed March 13th Pacquiao-Mayweather fight.
Pacquiao, according to the same source readily agreed to do so as a reward for the new champ. And, he said it in front of many of his political leaders and visitors.
There were many witnesses to what Pacquiao said, our source indicated.
Being a co-promoter of the soon to be fight of the decade, it will not be too difficult for Pacquiao to include Mayol on the undercard. All it may take is one phone call to Bob Arum and the deal is done.
But Pacquiao assigned the task to Koncz whose job on the Team Pacquiao includes taking care of the fights of the boxers under the aegis of Manny Pacquiao Promotions.
Apparently, we were told when initially asked by Pacquiao, Koncz was reluctant to get the job done saying that “it will be too difficult.”
Thus Pacquiao reportedly asked Koncz if he is willing to do it or not. He reportedly said “If you won’t do it, I will” - meaning Pacquiao himself will place the call to Arum and ask that Mayol be included in the undercard.
With that, our source indicated that Koncz reluctantly agreed to do what his boss wishes.
Thus, if Koncz does his job as he is supposed to do, Mayol may be fighting on the undercard of the Pacquiao-Mayweather tiff.
Stay tuned.
