MAYOL vs. SEGURA UNIFICATION: GOOD IDEA OR GREAT IDEA?

WBC light flyweight champ Rodel Mayol wants to have a title defense staged here in Cebu but his bigger dream is to fight in the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather megabout.

Mayol was a guest of the popular DYHP Cebu radio boxing program ?Pinoy Boxing? hosted by Salven Lagumbay and Edward Ligas. This writer was also a guest of the Sunday evening program and had a chance to listen in and ask questions.
Mayol has been sent feelers that he will be fighting Omar Nino Romero of Mexico for his first title defense. But Mayol would like to fight in the undercard of the high-profile fight card involving his idol Manny Pacquiao.

When asked if he was interested in unifying the titles, the newly crowned champ said he relishes the opportunity to have a unification bout with WBA champ Giovanni Segura of Mexico. Fighting Segura in the undercard of the biggest fight of this century will do wonders for Mayol?s career as well as treat fans to a potentially explosive fast paced 108 lb. war.

The 27 year old Segura won the interim WBA light flyweight title with a revenge second round KO win over Cesar Canchila of Colombia last March 2009. Canchila had earlier beaten Segura by unanimous decision but in the rematch Segura overwhelmed him from the opening bell.

Last July, Segura officially became WBA champion when he beat Juanito Rubillar of the Philippines by 6th round TKO. Rubillar was pulled in to challenge Segura on two days notice after original opponent Sonny Boy Jaro, another Filipino contender, failed to obtain a transient US visa.
In November, Segura finally faced Sonny Boy Jaro and stopped him in one round with a body shot. Segura has a record of 22 W ? 1L-1D with 18 KO?s.

The 28 year old Mayol (26W-4L-1D, 20 KO?s) won the WBC lt.flyweight crown from Mexico?s Edgar Sosa by 2nd round TKO in that same November fight card in Mexico. Team Sosa immediately filed a protest with the WBC stating that the head clash in the fight that dazed their boxer was intentionally done by Mayol. But the WBC ruled in Mayol?s favor.
Calling Mayol vs. Segura a fan friendly Philippines-Mexico grudge match would be quite an understatement. This is a fight that fans should clamour and we hope the powers that be will listen.
