Sonsona.
WBO superflyweight champ “Marvelous” Marvin Sonsona and WBO Oriental superbantamweight titlist Ciso ‘Kid Terrible’ Morales went into second gear in their training sessions in Cebu under Nonito Donaire, Sr. They moved their training camp from Talisay City to the IPI Gym in Mandaue City.
Sonsona spent a week of training in Gen.Santos City before transferring to Cebu last Wednesday. The 19 year old southpaw is undefeated in 14 fights with 12 knockouts and is the second youngest Filipino boxing champion. He will make the first defense of his world title belt against Mexico’s Alejandro Hernandez (22W-7L-1D, 11KO's) on November 21 in Canada.
They do their roadwork running up the Busay Hills of Cebu or in Talamban. Both Sonsona and Morales have already sparred with Richard Betos of the Braveheart Boxing Club.
Sonsona’s opponent, Hernandez has never been stopped. The 23 year old Hernandez previously won the WBC Mundo Hispano, WBO Latino and WBC Caribbean flyweight titles. In 2008, he lost in his first attempt to win a world title against WBO flyweight king Omar Narvaez of Argentina by unanimous decision.
When I arrived at the gym, Morales was sparring with Betos under the watchful eye of Jojo Palacios and Donaire. Morales feels better after having a slight fever last week. But he still continued to hit the heavy bag, do roadwork and sparring. He threw his punches with more authority as he hit the punch mitts with Donaire. Morales (13 W- 0 L, 8 KO’s) will face another Mexican in the undercard, Miguel Angel Gonzales Piedras (10W-1 L, 4 KO’s).
Federico “Magnifico” Catubay joined them in the gym. He will figure in an IBF world title eliminator against Juan Alberto Rosas of Mexico in LasVegas, a day before the Pacquiao-Cotto megafight. A win by Catubay will make him a mandatory title challenger against IBF world champ Simphiwe Nongqayi of South Africa.
Catubay also sparred with Richard Betos under the supervision of Donaire and former WBF welterweight titlist Dondon Sultan. He then proceeded to hit the mitts with Donaire.
Promoter Sammy Gello-ani said that the ringside seats for RUMBLE AT RAMA X in Orillia, Ontario, Canada has already been sold out. The current plan for Team Sonsona is to stay here in Cebu till the second week of November.
