Federico “Magnifico” Catubay will get the biggest break of his career when he figures in an IBF superflyweight title eliminator bout against Mexican Juan Alberto Rosas. Promoter Sammy Gello-ani relayed the information by phone that the fight will be held in Las Vegas next month, a day before the Manny Pacquiao-Miguel Cotto mega bout.
The winner of Catubay vs. Rosas will face IBF world champion Simphiwe Nongqayi of South Africa. Nongqayi won the title from Jorge Arce last month by unanimous decision.
Rosas (30 (KO 25) - L 5 ) held the Mexican and WBC Latino superflyweight titles. He lost an 8 round decision to AJ Banal two years ago. Five years ago, Rosas stopped Omar Nino Romero in nine rounds. This is the same Romero who dethroned Brian Viloria in 2006.
Last July, Catubay won an eight round split decision over world ranked Pramuansak Posuwan of Thailand in Naga, Cebu. Two years ago, he lost to Vic Darchinyan by 12th round TKO in Australia. Catubay will have to make the best of out his second chance to have a big international bout.
