Marvelous Marvin Sonsona is less than one week away from the fight of his life against WBO superflyweight champion Jose ?Carita? Lopez of Puerto Rico. He is continuing his roadwork in Canada together with trainers Jun Agrabio and Nonito Donaire, Sr.

Sonsona?s manager, Dr. Rajan Yraola informed philboxing that Marvin now weighs 122 lbs., just seven pounds over the limit. The weather over there is a cool 20 degrees Celsius. Sonsona will be working out during the afternoons at the at Cabbagetown gym in downtown Toronto.

Marvin will then have a public work out with Canadian former world champ Steve Molitor on Aug 31 and on Sept 2 he will be having a TV appearance with the Filipino community together with our Philippine Consul General.

Sonsona celebrated his 19th birthday last July 25. If he beats Lopez, Marvin will be the second youngest Filipino world boxing champion. Morris East, born August 8, 1973 in Olongapo City, Zambales, was 19 years and one month old when he won the world title on September 9, 1992. He beat Akinobu Hiranaka of Japan for the WBA jr. welterweight title in Tokyo. His 11th round knockout victory was chosen as Ring Magazine's KO of the year.

Sonsona is undefeated in 13 fights, winning 12 by knockout. Lopez (37W with 32 KO?s ? 7 L ? 2 D) won the vacant WBO superflyweight title with a 12 round unanimous decision win over Thailand's Pramuansak Posuwan. He will be making his first title defense against Sonsona. The 37 year old Lopez is not ranked among the top ten 115 lb. boxers in the ratings of the Ring magazine website where Z Gorres is ranked number 4 and Nonito Donaire just entered at number 10. Boxrec.com ranks Lopez at number 7, Gorres at number 8 and Donaire at number 2. Vic Darchinyan remains the top superflyweight in both websites.
