Downtown LA:- Golden Boy Promotions held its 3rd of the series of fights cards dubbed as ?Fight Night at the Club? at the Club Nokia Thursday night. The card was shown live on Versus. It goes without saying it was again a rousing success.
Abner Mares, the slick bantamweight and ex-2004 Olympian from nearby City of Montebello kept his record immaculate via a stunning display of body attacks that ended with a knockout of Carlos Fulgencio of Santo Domingo, Puerto Rico. The end came at 2:28 in round six.
Mares is best known amongst Filipinos as the conqueror of Diosdado Gabi of Davao City who he knocked out at 0:49 seconds in round two. Gabi had weight issues at the weigh-in before the fight which many attributed to poor discipline and equally poor management. When he came to the fight looking drained, Mares wasted no time and knocked him out.
With the win, Mares improved his record to 19-0-0, 12 KO. Fulgencio dropped to 11-4-1, 7KO.
In the supporting main event, David Rodela of Oxnard was tested to the limit by Gamalier Rodriguez of Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Their fight lasted the whole six rounds with Rodela finally coming up on top via a unanimous decision. The judge?s scores were 58-56, 59-55 and 59-55. Rodela?s aggressiveness save the day for him
With the win, Rodela is now 14-1-3, 6KO while Rodriguez slid down to 8-2-2, 4KO.
In another supporting main event, local LA boy David Gaspar dropped Sergio Espinosa of San Diego two times, once on the first and again on the third en-route to a six round unanimous decision victory. The judges scores were 58-54, 58-54, 59-53. Gaspar is now 11-2-1, 7KO and Espinosa is 16-6-1,5KO
In the opening TV event and the first fight of the night, Ricky Lopez, the kid from Colorado who trains at Oxnard, CA extended is unbeaten streak to 6 victories and no defeats. Lopez battered his opponent from Miami, Florida, John Wampash. He dropped him down twice in round two and again in round four. In round three he smashed the mouthguard out of Wampash mouth with a powerful right cross. The three judge?s scorers were all 39-33.
Lopez is now 6-0-0, 2K0 while Wampash dropped to 1-2-2, 1KO.
In the TV swing bout Carlos Molina of nearby City of Commerce TKO?d Antony Nelson of Kansas City, Mo in 2:13 of round one. Referee stopped the fight and saved Nelson from an outright KO.
In the final fight of the night Kerry Hope of Los Angeles beat Danny Jevic of Redondo Beach via a 6 round UD. The scores were 57-56, 57-56 and 59-54.
