BRADLEY‘S WIN OVER CAMPBELL COMPLETES OUTSTANDING SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA BOXING WEEKEND

Rancho Mirage, CA:- What a Southern California week-end for boxing!
Last Thursday night at the Club Nokia in downtown Los Angeles, Derrick Wilson of Florida beat a highly regarded undefeated boxer from the Los Angeles area, Charles Huerta via a stunning KO in 51 seconds.
As many pundits and funs at the Nokia indicated, it was indeed a huge upset as Huerta was well on his way to the top of the ladder.
Then last Friday night at the Pechanga Casino Resort in nearby City of Temecula, another upset came about. Tyrone Harris, a late replacement took a fight with Marvin Quintero, another raising star in the making.
Harris came in at the weigh-in a pound and a half overweigh and was fined by the California Athletic Commission.
During the early stages of the fight Quintero appear to have the upper hand until he hurt his right hand. But that did not seem to matter as he continued to give a good account of himself.
In the eight round however, Harris rocked Quintero with several unanswered hooks prompting referee Raul Caiz Jr to step in and stop the fight. Time: 1:05
The defeat of Quintero is a huge upset. Harris was not supposed to be that hard of a fight for Quintero as Harris was coming off a KO loss to Urbano Antillo last May.
Then Saturday night Agua Caliente Resort Casino held its first ever boxing promotions with Gary Shaw, Don King and Showtime TV.
The fight card featured two championship fights. In the first one, a bout for the WBC Super Lightweight title, Devon Alexander of St Louis, Mo. beat Junior Witter of Yorkshire, England. Witter quit after round 8th after claiming an elbow injury.
The fight was boring at best and the crowd kept on heckling the two boxers.
In the main event, Timothy Bradley from nearby North Palm Springs kept his WBO Junior Welterweight title via a controversial TKO of former multi-title holder, Nate Campbell of Jacksonville, Florida.
Although Bradley seem to be ahead during the whole fight, in the middle of round three an accidental head butt produced a cut over the left eye of Campbell. Campbell tried to point it out to the referee but he was ignored and Bradley took advantage of the momentary loss of attention of Campbell and pummeled him incessantly as Campbell stayed on the ropes.
After round 3, Campbell complained that he cannot see, thus the ring doctor and the referee David Mendoza waved the fight off giving Bradley the win.
Since the fight did not last 4 rounds and a boxer was injured, at the very least, some said it should have been ruled a no-contest.
Campbell complained vehemently but Mendoza stood his ground claiming that it was a cut caused a punch.
TV reply showed clearly that it was an accidental head butt, but there was also a punch that followed the head butt. But by then the fight is over and Bradley kept his title. With the win, Bradley is now 25-0-0, 12KO while Campbell fell to 33-5-1, 25KO.
The other fight results are as follows: Heavyweight upset, Demetrius King of Jackson, Michigan won via a 2nd round TKO in :52 seconds over Bowie Tupou of Tonga. Tupou was down in first round for an 8 count.
Featherweight Abraham Lopez of La Puente stopped Edward Utorov of Russia via a KO in 16 seconds of round 1. Lopez remained unbeaten at 7-0-0,7KO. Utorov is now 7-11-0-3KO.
Superwelterweight Alberto Herrera of Riverside KO’d John Red Tomahalk of Browning, Montana in round 1 after dropping him twice. Referee Jack Reese stopped the fight at the request of Tomahawk’s corner. Herrera went up to 4-0-0,3KO while Tomahawk is now 3-5-0, 3KO
In a bamtamweight fight between two women, Kaliesha West of Moreno Valley won via a very hard fought UD over Rolanda Andrews of Washington DC. The scores were 59-55, 59-55 and 59-56 all or West.
In a superbantaweight fight, Jonathan Arellano of Commerce, CA won via a TKO at 2:49 of round two over Fernando Moreno of San Diego. Arellano dropped Moreno once in round 1 and twice in round two. Refreee Rey Corona stopped the fight to prevent further injuries to Moreno. Arellano is now 2-0-0, 1KO while Moreno is 0-1-0.
In the opening bout, Lighweight John Jackson of Miami, Florida beat Carlos Hernandez of Indio,CA via a UD. The scores are 97-97, 97-91 and 97-92 all for Jackson. Hernandez was down once on the 6th and again on the 10th round.
Footnote: The Agua Caliente venue is very nice and the staff treated the media very kindly and provided excellent food to boot. However, the auxiliary photographers were assigned in a very poorly located area relative to a clear view of the ring. They were directly opposite the ring corners and on a walkway were the fans continuously passed making photography difficult at best. Perhaps, next time around the location will be changed to allow better coverage of the event.
