Beautiful Downtown LA:- Once again, the Golden Boy Promotions put together a fight card at the Club Nokia in this city just across the famed Staples Center. And once again, it was a rousing success.
Except that the local hero failed.
Charles Huerta, the undefeated local hero from nearby City of Paramount fought a main event fight with Derrick Wilson, an undefeated slugger from Fort Myers Florida. Wilson’s body language mimics Pretty Boy Floyd down to his arrogant demeanor.
Fortunately, he was able to back it up.
And how!
It took Wilson all of 51 seconds to put down Huerta with a left hook flushed to the chin during a torrid exchange right in front to our photo position at right side. Referee Raul Caiz, Sr counted him out.
The fight from the first bell to the KO was simply outstanding. The fighters met at center and immediately went to war. It was a give and take- winner takes all continuous slugfest. Who ever lands the first haymaker wins. Shades of the Bautista-Ponce de Leon fight sometime ago at the World Cup in Sacramento.
Huerta was a darling at the Golden Boy promotions and with his undefeated record and a humble attitude; he was being groomed to be a world champion. But that was not meant to be. With the win, Wilson improved to 5-0-1 (2KO) while Huerta fell to 11-1-0 (6KO).
After the fight Wilson and his team were whooping it out on the ring, an act not appreciated by the homegrown crowd. Some showed their disgust with Wilson was throwing ice and quarters at him.
The fight card was a mixed bag to ups and downs. Even the ring announcer was uncommon. A pretty blond named Amy Hayes. She was good and I am sure many will not mind if she does the rest of the other fights scheduled at the Club Nokia.
The curtain raiser was between Ronny Rios of Sta. Ana, Ca and Rodrigo Aranda of Las Vegas. The fight started slowly but in the third round Rios put Aranda on the canvas for an eight count and then proceeded to win the 4 round fight via a unanimous decision. All
judges scored the same, 40-35 for Rios. With the win Rios is now 6-0-0 (3KO) and Aranda, 8-10-2 (2KO)
Then came the first TV fight on Versus TV. It was between two giant heavyweights, Herman Binek of Los Angeles and Yohan Banks of Redwood City. About the second minute of the fight, the weight of the fighters messed up one of the ring post that supports the ropes. The fight had to be stopped for about 20 minutes as the crew at Club Nokia assisted by Golden Boy people frantically made repairs. When the fight resumed, Binek won via a UD. Binek is now 8-1-0 (6KO); Banks, 2-3-2 (1KO)
The co-main event was a battle between two lightweights, Luis Ramos Jr of Santa Ana and Sandro Marcos of Mazatlan, Mexico. Ramos scored 2 KD’s in round 1 and proceeded to win via TKO at :59 seconds in round 6th. Ramos is now 12-0-0 (6KO) while Marcos fell to 29-20-2 (24KO).
The third TV bout was between Carlos Molina of Norwalk and Eber Luis Perez of New York City. The fight ended with a TKO at 2:49 of round 4 for Molina. Molina remained undefeated and improved to 8-0-0 (4KO) while Perez is now 9-13-1 (7KO)
The TV swing bout was between a young warrior from Denver, Colorado who now makes his home at Oxnard, California (and trains with David Rodela and Victor Ortiz)
and a late bloomer from Pasadena named Eder Padilla. Padilla was making his pro debut.
It was obvious that Lopez with his 4 fight experience was better skilled that Peralta. And he showed that all though out the fight although Peralta appeared to be more aggressive.
Peralta was like a freight train and he kept on coming. But the superior skills of Lopez kept him away from trouble, albeit barely. Lopez won via a close UD with all judges scoring 39-37 for Lopez. Lopez improved to 5-0-0 (2KO) while Perez dropped to 9-13-1 (7KO)
The final fight of the night was a luckluster between two middleweights, Enrique Ornelas of Lake Elsinore and Roberto Baro of Culiacan, Mexico. Ornelas scored a KD in round 3 and won via a TKO at 1:09 of round 4.
The next fight card at Club Nokia is on August 27th. David Rodela will be on the main event against a yet to be announced fighter.
Stay tuned.
