Former World Boxing Council (WBC) super featherweight champion Genaro ?Chicanito? Hernandez has been diagnosed with cancer and the WBC is spearheading the campaign to help the former boxer whose only two career losses were inflicted by Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Hernandez (38-2, 17 KOs), retired after losing an 8th round TKO to Mayweatherfor WBC super featherweight championship in Las Vegas on Oct. 3, 1998.

He suffered a brutal 6th round stoppage loss in a failed bid to capture Oscar De La Hoya?s World Boxing Organization (WBO) lightweight title on Sept. 9, 1995 in Las Vegas.

A press statement from the WBC said World Boxing Cares chairperson Jill Diamond is asking the boxing community to join WBCares and the World Boxing Council in helping Genaro ?Chicanito? Hernandez, a former world champion and dear friend who is in need of assistance.

Jill sent the following information: ?Our beloved WBC world champion Genaro Hernandez is facing the fight of his life. Diagnosed with a rare cancer, his insurance will not cover his full treatment. The World Boxing Council, and our President Jose Sulaiman, urges you to join us in Genaro?s corner.
