FARENAS DEMOLISHES THAI BOXER

It was a quick work-out for Michael Farenas when he stopped Thai visitor Sorachet Tongmala last night in just over a minute of the first round of their featherweight bout scheduled for 10 rounds. Farenas caught the Thai with a two-punch combination to the midsection that had the latter sprawling to the canvas writhing in pain. Referee Silvestre Abainza counted Tongmala out when the latter failed to beat the 10-count though it was obvious that he would not be able to do so even at the count of 1,000 since it took several minutes for him to recover, even still gasping in pain after only a few people were left in the coliseum. The end to the fight was a fitting finale to the exciting card dubbed ?Bangis Ng Kamao ? Philippines vs. Thailand? held at the Mandaluyong Sports Center and which was promoted by WBO super-bantam champion Gerry Penalosa and Jay San Pedro in cooperation with Mayor Benhur Abalos.

The minimum-weight bout featuring Ruel Lagonero and George Salva lived up to its expectation as the two protagonists, both known for their combative spirits, slugged it out the entire eight rounds. Nonetheless, it was the shorter Lagonero?s more accurate timing that allowed him to have the more connects, even backing off Salva on many occasions, which gave him a comfortable UD victory by the scores of 78-74, 79-73, and 77-75.

The grudge fight between super-flyweights Vincent Palicte and Antonio Batuhan ended in a rather uneventful split draw. Palicte, whose only loss came at the hands of Batuhan a few months ago, had the better of the fight occasionally scoring some hard 1-2 jab straight and hooks combos to the head and body but a knockdown in the 5th ruled against him from what appeared to be a slip coupled by a point-deduction slapped on him in the 2nd for repeated low-blows allowed Batuhan to even up the scoring. Actual scores of the fight: 77-73 for Palicte, 76-74 for Batuhan, and 75-75.

In another bout at the bantamweight level, Roberto Gonzales scored the most explosive ending of the night when he scored a knock-out with a big left straight landing squarely on Johnson Alde?s jaw in 2:44 of the 5th round. This came after Gonzales was slowly battering the loosely defending Alde who by then had bruises below his both eyes.

For the results of the other bouts:

Eljune Leonardo defeated Tata Betonio via a UD by the scores of 79-73, 77-74, and 79-72 in their junior-flyweight bout;

Veteran Joe Galamiton, who had a deceptive 4-6-0 before the fight , taught Bobby Concepcion, brother of NABF champion Bernabe Concepcion, a neat boxing lesson en route to dealing the latter?s first professional defeat in their flyweight fight;

In a battle between two undefeated boxers, Noli Morales scored a second round knockdown to help erased the ?0? in Ricardo Roa?s record winning their junior-flyweight bout via a UD by the scores of 59-54, 57-56, and 59-55;

Flyweight Robert Talape prevailed over Bartolome Llona via a UD by the scores of 39-36, 38-37, and 38-37;

Wilbur Andogan and Lolito Sonsona figured in a 4-round split draw (39-37 for each and 38-38) in an action packed minimum-weight fight with the former using good ring generalship to neutralize his youthful opponent?s advantages in reach, height, and firepower; and

Boy Dondee Pumar, brother of former WBC International minimum-weight champion Gabriel Pumar, scored a UD victory over Rodello Cabillo by the scores of 39-37, 40-36, and 39-37 in their flyweight bout.
