Los Angeles, CA.:- Ana ?The Hurricane? Julaton, the female pride of Philippine boxing is on a fast track.
Julaton returns to the ring at the Tachi Palace Casino Resort in Lemoore, a nice cozy town up in central California some 3 hours drive north from LA on Thursday, August 21, 2008.
Julaton will battle for the WBC International Super Bantamweight title. She will trade leathers with the #6 WBC Super featherweight contender, Dominga Olivio of the Dominican Republic.
Olivo will gravely test the grit of Julaton. In her 11 pro fights she has only lost 3 times. Olivio lost to 135lbs star, Chika Nakamura, WBA lightweight champ Laya McCarter, who some aficionados consider as the P4P Queen, and most recently to IWBF Super bantamweight champ, Ela Nunez who is ranked #1 by Boxrec.com and #2 by the WBC.
Is this a correct move for the most promising female star of Freddie Roach? Why take the risk? Are the rewards that great?
Freddie Roach believes Manny Pacquiao can beat the much bigger Golden Boy. In the same line of thinking, he and Team Julaton feels that the Hurricane can give Olivio a run for her money and win the WBC title.
?Doc, I feel very strong and I know I will win! I have Coach Freddie up here in my training base for the final push and he will also be in my corner for the fight. I will not let my supporters or my fans down?, Julaton stated.
?This is very special to me not only because it?s my first title fight but also because I am fighting for the WBC International Title which is a title similar to the one Kuya Manny defended several times. But most specially, I strongly feel it?s fitting for me to take this fight now and help women?s boxing attain the international recognition it so richly deserved.?
?The Olympics began yet again this year without women?s boxing. There were so many of us who worked so hard hoping that we can be Olympians. Now that the dream is shattered, we need to move on to what is best for women?s boxing, Julaton added.
When asked why she was taking on a title fight so early in her pro career, her comeback was as follows:
?Why not??
?I spent over three years in the amateurs fighting the very best opponents. With this fight, I aim to put the spot light on women?s boxing to prove to the Olympic Organizers that women boxers, just like the other Olympic athletes are just as competitive and entertaining. Thus, they too deserved the Olympic fame.
?Wouldn?t it be great if I was fighting Olivio for the Gold Medal instead of the WBC belt? We should be on NBC slugging it out for our countries!?
Julaton is no stranger to the Tachi Palace Casino Resort. It was at the same venue where she recorded her first KO. She did it in :37 seconds of the first round.
Will history be made or did Julaton moved up to fast?
These questions will be answered on the evening of Thursday, August 21, 2008 at the Tachi Palace Casino Resort.
No matter what the outcome will be, it is exactly what women boxing needs:- a stint in the limelight!
The Julaton-Olivio tiff is part of the fight card promoted by the Tachi Palace in association with Christian Printup. The first bell rings at 6 PM and PhilBoxing will be there to witness the event.
