Los Angeles, CA -- I spoke to Team Donaire at about noon today (Wednesday, LA Time) to get updates on what?s going on at Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico.
Team Donaire enthusiastically informed me that their reception at Hermosillo was very nice. There were lots of people from the media who met them at the airport and there were more at the hotel where they are billeted.
?The town is very pretty, the people are very nice to us and the weather is almost like Southern California. The accommodation is not a super 5 star hotel but it is very nice and extremely comfortable. There is abundance of good restaurants near the hotel that serve food similar to our Filipino food. Their arroz-caldo is fabulous. Best of all, we have the same time zone as California, thus we do not have to worry about jet lag and time zone adjustments.?
?Glenn as of today is already 108 ? lbs. so we intend to keep him well nourished so that he can keep his strength. He may even put a couple of pounds but that should not be a problem come weight-in time on Friday afternoon.?
?Ang feeling ko napakalaki nang chances natin, kasi Glenn is very strong right now and is very fast. Talagang ensayado siya? ( I feel our chances are really good because right now Glenn is very strong and very fast. He is really well-trained.)
The fighters are scheduled to formally meet the press on Thursday and on Friday, they will do the official weight-in.
Glenn Donaire (R) lands a right on Albuquerque in his most recent fight in Reno, Nevada.
The fight will be televised on Azteca TV live from the Palenque de la Expo at Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico. It will be free TV and can be seen all over the USA where Azteca is available.
Headlining the fight card, dubbed at ?Latin Fury V? will be Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. He will be exchanging leathers with Matt Vanda of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
On the main undercard, Ulisis Solis will be defending his IBF Light-Flyweight Title against Glenn Donaire.
Donaire will be the third Filipino in a row to challenge Solis. Solis previously defended his crown against Rodel Mayol (TKO in 8th) and Bert Batawang (TKO in 9th).
Hopefully, for the Filipinos the fight on Saturday will end up as ?the third time is a charm? and Glenn Donaire will come back to California on Sunday as the new IBF light flyweight champion joining his brother Nonito Jr. as a world champion.
Let it be!
