Los Angeles, CA:- Glenn Donaire, the young man known as the ?Filipino Bomber? has left for Hermosillo, Mexico enroute to his title fight with Ulisis Solis on Saturday, July 12, 2008. Donaire will challenge Solis for his IBF Light Flyweight title.
Doniare?s father and trainer called this writer early today to update Philboxing about his son, Glenn. Donaire Sr., called from Arizona while waiting for their flight to Hermosillo.
?We are now waiting for our flight to Mexico and we are all set to bring the title with us to California come Sunday afternoon.?
Glenn for his part said that he is in good shape to go for the title. ?Ensayado ako nang husto sa laban na ito (I am fully trained for this fight). Alam kong magaling ang kalaban pero tiwala ako sa sarili ko? (I know my opponent is good but I have faith in myself).
Glenn Donaire will try to achieve what two previous Filipino fighters unfortunately failed to do.
Rodel Mayol was first. He fought Solis at the All-State Arena at Rosemont, Illinois in April 2007. Mayol was doing well early on the fight and was even thought to be leading. In the later rounds however, he started to lose his wind and was KO?d in the 8th round. Mayol?s defeat was attributed to his team who apparently did not take care of his needs resulting in his poor conditioning.
Then Bert Batawang came up in December of the same year. Batawang?s case was different from Mayol, but the results were the same. Although he lasted one more round than Mayol, he too was KO?d.
Batawang?s case was totally different from Mayol. He had no management problem. Solis?s victory was more than likely vastly helped by the psychological war he waged against Batawang prior to the fight. Solis knew the reputation of Batawang as a hard hitter. Thus, he had to resort to other stuff to vastly improve his chances of keeping his crown. Solis kept on postponing the fight schedule for various flimsy reasons disrupting the training regimen of Batawang and frustrating him to no end. When the fight finally happened, Batawang was so mentally drained by the constant changes that he was not able to cope up with the fight. The fact that the fight happened at Guadalajara, Mexico, the hometown of Solis did not help either.
Hopefully, Donaire will fair better than Mayol and Batawang. From the looks of it, he has far better chances than the two. First, his father is his trainer, thus he is constantly monitored. And he has a fantastic manager in Cameron Dunkin. Plus, he has the advantaged of sparring with his brother, Nonito the IBF/IBO World Flyweight champion.
With that hopefully, by late Saturday, we will have brothers who are both world champions at the same time. But more importantly, we will have another Filipino champion on the books.
