Nonito Donaire, the IBF world flyweight champion and his girl friend Rachel were being driven to Reno, Nevada from San Leandro, California to witness the fight of his brother Glenn against Brazilian slugger Jose Albuquerque when the car they were riding hit a jagged piece of frozen road ice. The sharp ice cut the tire of their car and it skidded around the ice laden road and ended up against a guard rail.
Fortunately for Donaire and the rest of the people in the car, Rachel, driver Brian Jugarap and his brother Arvin no one was hurt in the accident.
?I was not paying attention to the driving of my cousin as I was busy playing a video game with Rachel on the back seat. Suddenly there was a loud pop on the tire and before we knew it we were skidding across the road towards the guard rail? Donaire informed this writer.
The car ended up being damaged but not significantly enough to prevent them from continuing their trip to Reno. ?We simply slowed down until we passed the icy road and everything was cool after that?, he added.
The group reached Reno without any further incident in time to see the fight which Glenn won by unanimous decision.
